On the 10th of August 2024, Kuen Cheng High School Physics Department
organised a deepwater oil rig model designing competition for science stream students
of Senior Middle One. After a short briefing, students gathered at the lobby of the
new hostel to begin working on their model designs.
Students teamed up with 1-2 teammates, prepared a proposal beforehand, including a
rough drawing and model. The model must be able to withstand at least 5 kg of
weight before adding up to 8 kg. Marks were awarded based on the weight their
model could withstand.
While making sure their models were sturdy enough, students also used their
creativity to decorate them. There were cartoon based models, heart-shaped models,
models with the national flag, and even a model designed as a whole basketball court.
It was time for the fun part, the presentation and the competition. Each class had to
choose a model to represent their class. This time, the model not only had to bear 7.5
kg of weight but also had to withstand waves created by the teachers. If one of the
model’s weights falls off, the opposing team wins. During the finals, with the cheering
of their respective classes, Sr1ScB tied up with Sr1ScE, which leaves Madam Chua
Lee Lee, our Principal with a hard decision to make, deciding which team gets the 1st
prize. Madam Chua ended up giving both teams the win, making it a happy ending
for this event.
