Among the hardest challenges the two faced while establishing Luma’ Kembara and their
other charity organizations were the lack of funding, manpower and experience. They had
difficulties cooperating with the people in need due to an unfortunate lack of understanding.
Furthermore, their lack of funding led to a deficiency of proper equipment and setup, leading
to them having to repeatedly borrow appliances from the people in the communities.

Despite the grueling hardships and lack of public appreciation, the two continued to run

their charity operations. The primary motivation for them to continue was the strong hope that
they would be able to make even the slightest positive change in the communities, and even
uncover hidden talent within said communities, just waiting to be given the opportunity to
     shine.

As to why they chose to base themselves in Sabah, despite being Penang locals, YiLyn
said that because they had sent so much help over to Semporna during the pandemic, they
wanted to finally see the faces that they had been helping so much, and unintentionally got
stranded in Sabah due to certain circumstances.

“After coming here, we kind of got stuck lah. [chuckle]”

In addition to the interview, I was able to witness one of Luma’ Kembara’s charity
distribution events in Semporna town. The Luma’ Kembara team arrived in their boats stocked
with free food and necessities for the distribution. The local citizens in need lined up and waited
patiently as the Luma’ Kembara team unloaded their supplies. It was surprisingly heart-
warming to see the sincere gratitude on the face of the children and teens alike who received the

     distributed food.

Luma’ Kembara was a deep reminder to me that I will hold dearly, that in this world
there are still people who truly do good, purely out of the goodness of their hearts.
