Recently, I had a unique experience on a staycation in Semporna, Sabah;
enjoying with my family the natural scenery, the beauty of the underwater world
and even witnessing the natural phenomenon of a swarm of fireflies lighting up a
mangrove. Among all these attractions, one would not be expecting a kind-hearted
organization working tirelessly to support those in need.
We stayed at a lesser-known hotel consisting of multiple water top chalets just off
the coast of a nearby island - Luma' Kembara hotel. The experience there was both
similar and unlike most generic hotels. The place gave us a very cozy and friendly vibe,
with simple yet fulfilling furnishing providing a warm and fuzzy emotion, and the
extremely friendly staff, who made us feel as if we were one big family. (Oh, and there's
adorable cats there too.)
Besides being a hotel, Luma’ Kembara is also a charity organization which aims
to help those trapped below the poverty line, especially undocumented citizens who have
no access to education or even jobs, in Semporna town by providing free food and daily
necessities. They also have a sister organization based in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor
known as Kembara Kitchen, a disaster relief operation.
During our stay there, I was fortunate enough to get an interview with one of the
founders of Luma’ Kembara - YiLyn Chan. Ms Chan and her co-founding partner,
William Cheah, who are both Penang locals, founded Luma’ Kembara during the
pandemic on a spur of inspiration and interest.
“We thought it would be, something interesting, to just see what we could do (to help).”
