Reported by Chloe Chan Sr1ScC
On the 13th of January 2023, Junior 2 and Senior 1 students were given lessons on
how to respond to emergency situations. Groups of St. John Ambulance Society
students entered each class to educate its students.
St. John Ambulance Society members made a small introduction then proceeded to
perform demonstrations either on themselves or with dummies. They demonstrated
CPR, the Heimlich Maneuver, bandaging and many more.
Here is a little run down on what was taught:
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR):
CPR is a fundamental lifesaving technique used to revive individuals who have
suffered a cardiac arrest. Students were taught the correct hand placement and
compression rhythm necessary to perform CPR effectively.
The Heimlich Maneuver:
Choking is a common emergency situation, particularly in environments where
people may be eating or playing. The Heimlich Maneuver is a technique used to
dislodge obstructions from a person's airway. Through demonstrations and
practice, students learned how to identify the signs of choking and administer the
Heimlich Maneuver safely and effectively.
The St. John Ambulance Society members encouraged student participation and
volunteers were called upon from the classroom. Under the guidance of the society
members, students engaged in simulated emergency situations, applying the
techniques they had just learned.
Emphasizing the importance of quick thinking and swift action in emergency
scenarios, the St. John Ambulance Society members urged students to remain
vigilant and prepared to assist others in times of need.
