Kuen Cheng High School Chinese
Orchestra – A Holiday Training Flashback For the newbies and students without instruments, learning “Fight
Song” using cups was a great way to boost their memory due to the
use of various actions. In the end, they managed to finish learning the
song and played through it in full. It was a fun experience for them.
Meanwhile, the members with instruments got to hone
their musical skills as the coaches, Mr Goh Suk Liang and Mr
Chong Koi Min, assessed their performances. They got various
useful tips from the coaches to perform better next time.
After the activities, Mr Goh gave a talk on Liu Tianhua, a Chinese
Musician, and his work on the “erhu” (a Chinese instrument).
Despite various plights and challenges he had to endure, he
still worked hard and contributed a lot to Chinese music with
his many pieces, including “Liang Xiao” and “Bing Zhong Yin”.
Next, Mr Chong gave useful information about the basics of a
Chinese orchestra, which included the instruments, the seating
and many more. The talk benefited the orchestra members
hugely.

The training program ended successfully. When asked whether they
thought that this program is helpful, the Chinese Orchestra’s Club
Committee believes that for an orchestra, keeping standards up is
extremely important and essential for growth. Through these activities,
members of the orchestra can continuously sharpen their skills.
Meanwhile, they can also understand the essence of Chinese orchestras.
