2007. In line with the magazine’s theme, we
had the opportunity to interview the president
of the Scientific Research Club.
An Interview with The president of the Scientific Research Club
is Jolene Wong Yee Wen from Sr1ScC. Jolene
was previously a member of the Broadcasting
the President of the Club but soon realized that broadcasting wasn’t
her passion. Eager for a change, she decided
to explore other options, and coincidentally,
ScientifIc a friend of hers recommended the Scientific
Research Club, describing it as interesting and
mysterious. Intrigued by the prospect, Jolene
Research joined the club.
Although Jolene joined the club in Junior 2, she

last year and succeeded in securing it this year.
“I wish to enhance the club’s recognition and
improve its overall functioning,” she stated.
However, Jolene soon discovered that said role
came with significant responsibilities and a
busy schedule. Nonetheless, she emphatically

“This provides members with practical

from textbooks,” she remarked. The club also
organizes exceptional experiments, although
they acknowledge the potential dangers
involved.
“We had a significant role in Science Week,
but unfortunately, it had to be cancelled due to
unforeseen circumstances.” Jolene lamented.
While internally, the club is planning to
collaborate with other clubs to host a murder
mystery game called ‘Invisible Ink’, where
members will decipher clues to uncover the true
murderer. Additionally, Jolene revealed that they
are considering organizing a communication
conference with school reporters in the future.
Regarding ongoing research projects, Jolene
emphasized that the club’s activity coordinators
typically conduct a test run of the experiments
before involving the members. They also
ensure that all necessary materials are
prepared in advance. Jolene mentioned, “Our
latest experiment is called ‘Tin Farm,’ which
involves extracting iron from tin chloride. We
are planning to conduct this experiment in the
near future.”
The experiments conducted by her were limited
in scope but nonetheless exciting, one of which
was the ten-minute ice cream experiment, in
which participants enthusiastically mixed the
concoctions together. She noted that members
really liked this kind of experiment because it
was unique and rewarding—all of them got a
delectable scoop of ice cream at the end!
Another experiment was slime making, where
members got to decorate and customize their
slime. It was a tactile experiment, as each
member got to explore the wonderful world
of colors and textures. “I feel happy because
the members have a broader learning range,”
she stated. With the endless opportunity to try
new things, the club acted as another source of
knowledge for many members. They’ve even
had the chance to indulge in visual delights—
an experience to be genuinely cherished.
As Jolene has only recently assumed the
role of president, she hasn’t encountered
any major problems, but she had to face the
challenge of balancing between her academic
responsibilities and her curriculum activities.
She’d feel like her club was disregarded, but
she’d also feel like she neglected her studies.
Lost in her sea of duties, she felt a slight
disappointment at her lacklustre exam results
from May, but she wouldn’t let this prevent her
from moving forward.
Oh, what about those seniors? They surely give
her a bad time, right?
It turns out that Jolene has gained a massive
amount of respect from her seniors. Originally,
she was a secretary last year and was already
acquainted with her seniors. Most of them
praised her for having the ability to lead this
club, while some weren’t aware that she was
actually younger. “When they realized, they
were in shock!” she recalled tastefully.
In the future, she hopes that her club will
contribute more thrilling activities for the
students at Kuen Cheng High School. This
way, there will be greater recognition of this
club and increased willingness from people to
join the club.
“A shoutout for my club? I promise that the
Scientific Research Club isn’t as boring as it
sounds. We have a lot of stuff to do; joining
the club is definitely worth it!” she exclaimed.
Jolene took us down to the depths of scientific
experiments and showed us a new side of
what was once dull and bland to some. Who
knows that science could be so whimsical and
entertaining too?
