The Decision is Ours: Jointly reported by:

Soft Skill Workshop Series Interview Foo Zhing Yee Sr2ScA

                                                                                               Khoo Xin Yi Sr2ScA

22nd of July 2023, 8:00a.m. to 10:15a.m., a series of Soft Skill Workshops was
organised by the Counselling Department in collaboration with various universities. All
Senior Middle Two students participated in one workshop each, chosen by themselves
beforehand, a first for the school’s Independent Learning Day.

According to Ms Kang Ruey Chyi, Head of the Counselling Department, organiser of
the event, the series was held in order to cultivate and allow students to realise their potential

with soft skills. It was directed towards Senior Middle Two students as quite a lot of them
would be leaving after SPM, whereas they would learn interview and resume writing skills if
they stay for Senior Middle Three.

“Communication skills and presentation skills are a must for the students’ future.” After
discussing with several universities, Ms Kang found it tricky when deciding what topics each
        university would present.

Ms Kang specified for the workshop to be more interactive and less talk-based. She also
gave way for the universities to decide on their topics while ensuring that not many of them
        overlap.

On the topic of event announcement, it was the first time students were given the
chance to choose which workshop they wanted to attend, a great leap towards giving students
more independence in their co-curricular education. Naturally, challenges arose in supervising
        all 13 workshops.

To tackle this, the Counselling Department enlisted the help of carefully selected
student helpers for each workshop. They were in charge of emceeing and helping the speakers
        with their setup.

Overall, the workshops received positive feedback from the students, most being rated
4/5 stars. Most learned quite a lot and had fun with their friends.

To end off, Ms Kang pointed out that Independent Learning Day, a weekly event day
on all Saturdays, should be more autonomous and creative instead of just plain talks or rigid
activities. She encouraged students to be the ones making decisions for their own education
with teachers playing the roles of supervisors instead in Independent Learning.

A huge thank you to Ms Kang, teachers from the Counselling Department and all
universities involved for organising all the workshops.
