In conjunction with the annual Chinese Lunar New Year Celebration in Kuen Cheng High School, the Co-curricular Department held a Zodiac Clay Figurines Competition on 3 February 2024 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at the lobby of the new hostel building.

Equipped with a pack of colourful air-dry clay each, the 50 contestants were not constrained by the amount and size of the zodiac models they can create within that hour. By the end of the hour, art subject teachers would evaluate their figurines and announce the winners on the spot.

A close up view on the creating process

As the contestants were engrossed in their creation, I spoke to the teachers in charge of this event. In the words of Madam Hee Siaw Fuey, the Admin Head of the Co-curricular Department, the main objective of this competition was to provide a space for students to embrace new avenues of creativity and creation, at the same time preserve the traditional art and craft. “I hope we can organise a larger-scale competition next year. Hopefully, we can create one enormous snake zodiac together.”
