We had a warm and meaningful gathering at the school today. On our Monday Weekly Assembly of 17 February 2020, students of Junior One, Junior Three and Senior Three had their turn gathered in the school hall. The students arrived punctually and awaited instructions from the prefects. The students greeted the teachers and sang the national anthem and school song. The prefects then lead the students in reciting the school motto.
The school motto is made up of four components namely politeness, righteousness, honesty and sense of shamefulness. The assembly continued with a speech from the school’s Deputy Principal, Madam Chong Siew Fah. She talked about Kuen Cheng School Culture. She began by explaining the school motto in detail. Besides that, she also elaborated the school’s three main concerns as the core of the school culture, comprising Reading, Appreciation and Feeling of Gratitude.
Reading is the most significant and major part of the school culture as it inspires learning and broadens our knowledge. Firstly, our school has supported this idea, by setting a 10-minute reading session every morning as well as maintaining Read n Go Corners and activities by the school Library. Secondly, Appreciation reminds students to be grateful of everything around us. The school’s series of activities in this area includes recycling, reducing usage of electricity, school gardening and waste separation. And, Thirdly, Feeling of Gratitude has become an important part of our school culture, especially with the promotion of Gratitude Month by the Counseling Department. We must know the blessings we receive in order to be able to appreciate and show care towards others. More details will be revealed later in the forthcoming 2020 “I Love Kuen Cheng” activity. Madam Chong also talked about Manners of Queuing, When Taking the Lift and Greetings. These three aspects are all recorded in the school Student Handbook. She also reminded the students to not play pranks on someone, especially the latest “Tripping Jump Challenge” as it could cause serious injuries, danger and even death.
Up next, the Vice Principal, Ms Koo Lai Ping gave a short speech about the importance of reading and its benefits. The aim of the school’s reading activities mentioned earlier is to help students turn reading into a daily habit. Through reading, readers can communicate with the author, increase their imagination and knowledge as well. It is planned that in every weekly assembly, a student will come onstage to share a passage he/she found meaningful to the rest of the students and teachers. This week’s passage is called “Taste of Life” and it was read by Hee Yit Seng from Sr1ComA. There was also a brief Q&A session between him and a student from the Broadcasting Club asking about his thoughts on the passage. In this way, the audience has been given a chance to understanding a different and personal view.
Last but not least, several awards had been given out to winners for different competitions held interschool as well as from the co-curricular activities. The hardworking prefects brought up onstage the certificates, medals, trophies and set the photo placing. Awards for the school’s Cleanliness Competition were also handed out before the assembly ended. Students expressed thankfulness to their respective teachers. They look forward to more achievements in this year.
