On the 29th of April 2024, the Teacher’s Day Organising Committee organised a tug-of-war event between classes of Senior Middle One and Two. Many classes sent their best representatives, mighty and strong to compete in a test of strength. Although it was only the preliminaries, things were just as heated as the finals as students fueled with vigour and determination put their all into qualifying for the end game.

In this event, each class was to invite a teacher to accompany them in this tug of war to improve the relationship between student and teacher. Many teachers were invited to participate and join in on the fun with the participating students to compete and make it for the finals.

As the students were seated in the lobby of Block A, the participating teachers were first called out to be given an appreciation gift for participating in this event with fellow students. After that, the match-ups were drafted and the classes prepared to face their respective foes.

The lineups of each team were as follows: one match with female students facing off against each other and the same repeated with the male students. If it ended in a tie, there would be a final match where the strongest of both teams would participate in an all-out fight to determine who would qualify for the finals.

‘On the count of three, 3, 2, 1, PULL!!!’

With that, the students representing each class started to pull with all their might. The rope moved back and forth, bobbing towards one side to the other, as each class used all their might to turn the tide in their favour and overwhelm their opponents with sheer strength. The expressions they had while pulling the rope speaks volumes about how much they wanted to win in this competition and their unwillingness to let the opponent have even one-up against them.

    Participants giving their all

It goes without saying that every participating student had fully committed themselves to the event to win and bring glory to their class and their teachers. Alas, in the end, there were only 3 teams left from both the Senior Middle One side and the Senior Middle Two side, respectively. The qualifying teams for the finals of the tug-of-war event in the Senior Middle One team were Sr1ScA, Sr1ScG and Sr1ComA. Meanwhile, on the Senior Middle Two side, we have Sr2ScF, Sr2ScG and Sr2ComC. Congratulations to these classes for qualifying for the finals of the tug-of-war event! And to those who weren’t able to qualify for the finals, I firmly believe that every student has made every effort and not be too disappointed with yourselves for this one competition as there is always a next time and, in turn, another chance to prove yourselves.

At the end, a group photo was taken with the students and teachers, and they all went their separate ways to prepare for the upcoming finals of the tug-of-war event in the following month.

On May 24, 2024, Kuen Cheng High School’s Teacher’s Day organising committee collaborated with the school Volleyball Club to carry out the tug of war finale. The activity aimed to strengthen the relationship between teachers and students, nurture the competitors’ teamwork skills as well as to build a strong sense of sportsmanship amongst the students.

The competition was held in front of the school’s new dormitory building at 11a.m.. Before the competition began, participants gathered at the scene to listen to the briefing, brimming with the competitive liveliness of the teams endeavouring to bring glory to their classes. One class even made a vow to clean their class for a month if they lost, further adding to the stakes at hand.

During the finals, the competition used the round-robin style to determine the winners. Meaning that each team has a chance to take the gold despite losing a match to the opposing team. On the contrary to the preliminary round which used the knock-out style, giving only a match to each team to determine who gets to ascend to the finals.

There were a total of 6 teams that made it past the tug of war preliminaries to take part in the finals. Three being from Senior Middle One classes and another three from Senior Middle Two classes. These six teams in turn have to compete with those from the same grade as them. After the briefing, the teams then assumed their positions at each end of the rope to begin the competition.

The shrill call of the referee’s whistle was their signal to begin the tugging. The teams from each side of the rope pulled with all their might to attain the top spot of the podium, cheered on by the audience that hoped that their team would win.

After the match, the organisers called all team leaders to discuss the results. Then, the prize-giving ceremony took place. All teams, no matter defeated or triumphant, received prizes such as an umbrella, a shoe bag and keychains.
