A concert themed Threads of Sound had been successfully held at the Auditorium of Kuen Cheng High School on the evening of 15 June 2019; more than 700 enthusiastic and avid music lovers left the concert satisfied and entertained. Kuen Cheng Philharmonic Orchestra (KCPO) was founded in 2011, originally a String Orchestra Ensemble. The concert marked its debut as a philharmonic orchestra society, having been transformed since 2017. Although the orchestra’s mission is dedicated to the performance of classical music, however, the evening event has presented different genres included modern, classical, well-known tunes of films and games to old gems of the nineties’, they did not fail to impress.

Before the concert commenced, the audience had been requested to observe a one-minute silence together with the orchestra members to pay respect to the passing of our beloved Chairman of the Board, Tan Sri Dato’ Lee Shin Cheng who had contributed immensely to the development of Kuen Cheng High School and the growth of KCPO in particular.

The first few music pieces, namely Avengers, Final Fantasy Suite as well as a medley consisting of Getaran Jiwa and Setia,  were separately conducted by two conductors; both displaying immense understanding and control of the melody and resonance of the orchestra. The student musicians responded with equal passion and high spirit. A Senior One student, Isaac Chan, who has only been in the music scene for four years, managed two flawless cello performance solo. Alumni of KCPO had also returned to play for their former club, expressing the gratitude in a symphony only musicians were able to relate to and comprehend.

A short play formed solely by KCPO members, portraying a young boy struggling to learn piano whilst searching for a suitable mentor had finally come to realize the importance of being independent and held responsible for his own act. This special presentation was interactive, interesting and had instantly captivated many hearts of young audience. Besides that, dancers were added, also from KCPO members, to the Tango music. A group of young beginner violin players were given the opportunity to perform a simple yet nostalgic piece, Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star variations, alongside with the seniors.

The ensemble performance was followed by a Chinese Medley consisting of Colourful Clouds Chasing the Moon, Mamahao, and KCPO’s signature piece Dance of Yao. Familiar and nostalgic melodies entranced the audience in the Harry Potter Suite. The concert was ended with a Film Medley which had combined multiple popular scores from films across the ages. The echoes of the final tense and anticipating drum roll resonated within the auditorium. The concert was conducted by many instruments with various types of music. It was divided into two major parts with an intermission of 20 minutes. The audience responded with thunderous applause at the end of each part. It was a new and memorable experience to the orchestra members as well. We truly enjoyed the quality and variety of the melodies was greatly satisfying!
