On the 31st of May, a talk regarding photography techniques was hosted for the students of Kuen Cheng High School. The talk kicked off at 10.00AM sharp through Zoom video platform, with a short and concise introduction by the hosts. The main speakers were Mr Ng Jin Jet, a professional photographer, and prominent members of our School Photography Club.

Mr Ng is a professional photographer, who mainly works in event photography. He graduated from a professional photography training school and has been nominated for many photography awards. He is also the Coach for the school’s Photography Club.

The talk began with Mr. Ng sharing the motives and his thoughts for photography, and the basic types of photography. “Photographs are not just for display”, he said. Photographs serve as proof of an era and are meant to be historical references as well.

There are many reasons why people pick up photography, mainly personal interests, creating content, to elaborate on the news and so on. During the duration of his talk, Mr Ng shared much of his experience regarding photography, offering many slick tips such as utilising angles, how to operate a camera by adjusting the ISO, shutter speed and so on.

There are also many things to consider when taking photos, including the subject of the photo and how to make sure the subject is eye-catching. When taking photos, one must always plan beforehand, to confirm what the subject of the photo will be and arrange photographers at proper spots so that their view is not obstructed.

“A photographer must always have proper equipment”, Mr Ng said. There are many types of lenses and tripods to choose from, ranging from semi-professional to highly professional with a wide price range. These can be rented or bought depending on one’s budget.

He also mentioned that photo storage and backup is very important when intending to upload photos to public domains as data can be hacked, stolen or otherwise lost easily. Besides, taking not just a single picture is also important as it offers more leeway for errors.

After that, Oh Yi Heng and Tan Yoong Kang from the Photography Club started sharing their thoughts on photography. They said that interest in photography can be cultivated by taking photos often, whether with a camera or with a phone. There are many types of photography, as mentioned, that can become pathways that lead to one being fully immersed in the photography experience.
