The 20th of February 2019 marked a very special day for the 30-odd newcomers of the Broadcasting Club. As the dismissal bell rang and members got into their PE uniforms, they gathered at Classrooms B302 and B303 for the 2-hour Orientation Party.
Newcomers first gathered in B303 where they were given stickers of male or female cartoon characters while existing members were in the classroom next door preparing for the carpet ceremony. A while passed before the newcomers were greeted with ceremonious applause as they entered the adjacent classroom. They took turns placing their sticker on a board with stickers from existing members and leaving their signature next to it, symbolizing their official integration into the warm and welcoming family of the Broadcasting Club.
The event coordinators briefed members about the upcoming station games before sending members out to partake in them at the B303, C504, and C601 classrooms. Two games were played at each station, with three game masters to host the games there.
The first game at the B303 station had members competing to name the most things shown. Since the group that yelled their group name first got to answer, frantic screaming and laughter can be heard throughout this game. The next game involved more general knowledge but the same amount of yelling, as it was a geography trivia game.
C504 housed the second set of games, both involving pretty high levels of attention and precision. The first game had members performing the incredible feat of transferring marbles with chopsticks. This game left members with varying degrees of cries of defeat. The next game was a test of eyesight, where members took turns finding exact change through a tiny hole in a party hat.
The third class, C601 was the venue for the last two of the six games prepared. The first game included more physical activities such as planking, pumping, and sit-ups. While these challenges are more demanding, with determination, the members of the club, both old and new were able to pull through and complete the challenge. The second game was no easy feat either, as members were asked to flip a coin by beating on the desk. Again, with much anticipation and close calls, the games drew to a delightful close.
As per yearly tradition, the group with the lowest overall score from the games is required to receive a pre-set punishment. This year, that group had to sing everyone’s favorite earworm, “Let It Go”, in front of everyone else.
After the punishment, the food coordinators wheeled in the food for everyone to enjoy after a tiring afternoon. Fried noodles and 100 Plus were served to the starving members. Members put the time to good use by breaking the ice even more, as they exchanged information with each other. With everyone’s bellies full, the event coordinators played the club song, ‘Kite’. The older members who were familiar with the song started singing first, and the new members followed suit by referring to the lyrics provided. All 80 members singing along showed the unity that will be crucial for the tasks in store.
With the end of the song, the gifting of a handmade card to each and every one of the members to symbolize their entry into Broadcasting Club commenced. After a quick few words from the main coordinator of the orientation, the event concluded and members went home at 5.15 p.m. with positive expectations.
