As the COVID-19 pandemic is still evolving, Kuen Cheng High School’s annual class singing competition could only be held online. On the 12th of February 2022, the School held a Saturday Independent Learning Day event, which was hosted by Music Teacher Ms Wong Sheau Hui where students shared their experience participating in the event.

Before starting, participants were reminded to fill in a form regarding their learning experience after the session is over. Ms Wong also thanked the team who made this event possible. After introducing what the class singing competition is, she invited a few students from Jr3Z(1), whom she referred to as her “disciples”, to share their experience working together to create a music video.

The first student shared with the participants how to choose songs, arrange songs, coordinate playing styles and how to record the melody. Another student shared how she created the music video in several components. She also emphasized the importance of working together. The last student shared her tips in audio editing. She suggested using Audacity, which was a well received audio editing software as it was also mentioned several times by other students. Then, a spectacular MV by Class Jr2Z(1) was shown.

Next, students from Jr3S(5) were called upon to share their experience. One of the students taught the participants about arrangement and shared that they had to change parts of the songs that were too sensitive. Another student taught the participants audio and video editing. She briefly explained how to use Audacity for audio editing and Jianying for video editing. Class Jr3S(5)’s music video was unique as it was presented using beautiful hand drawn animations.

A string of amazing performances, including a saxophone and harmonica performance, was shown as an intermission before a few more classes shared their experiences. A fellow music teacher also came up to share his thoughts on how the students performed. The session ended with Ms Wong sharing her conclusion and thoughts for the day event.
