On the 5th of July, Kuen Cheng High School held a virtual school assembly, usually held on Mondays morning when in-school, for all Senior Middle Three students.
“I used to tell all students that self-directed learning, self-discipline, and determination were important as well as influential in your academic performance. But no one expected that during this pandemic, these values would become vital to keep you afloat through online learning. ” said Principal, Dr Chua Lee Lee during her speech. She mentioned the concern she had had for the batch of SPM takers before her, but the outcome proved her wrong. The results of the SPM 2020 takers were surprisingly better than those of previous batches. For this, she is really grateful for the students’ diligence and perseverance during these trying times.
Madam Chua then shared statistics showing the overall number of students who took the Chinese Language and Chinese Literature subjects in SPM last year. This was to further emphasize the need for Malaysian Chinese to preserve their own culture. Apart from being thankful for students who put in all their effort to take these subjects, she hoped the following SPM takers would achieve similar or better results.

“It has not been easy for everyone during this pandemic.” Apart from students, teachers have also faced difficulty when switching to virtual learning. Madam Chua was relieved that the majority of students have been willing to cooperate with teachers to make online classes as smooth as possible. Despite all of us staying at home, she encouraged students to take this as an opportunity to improve themselves in preparation for the upcoming UEC examination.
Following that, the Head of the Academic Department briefed students on information and precautions regarding the mid-year online assessment in the following week. Students were reminded to test their relevant software and devices beforehand to ensure their exam can carry out smoothly. As always, cheating and plagiarism were strictly forbidden.
Next, the Vice Principal, Madam Koo Lai Ping started off her speech by advising students to prepare themselves for their competitive future. Students will soon encounter fierce competition from various peoples and AI in society. These days, critical thinking and effective social and communication skills are some vital soft skills. Instead of putting full attention on studies, our School has been helping students in discovering each and every one of their personal strengths. Kuen Cheng High School has organized various events every Saturday since 2019 to cultivate all-rounder students. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, many activities were put on hold for the time being.
Madam Koo further shared that Kuen Cheng High School will keep track of the students’ learning progress. Students’ personal achievements and participation in different events and programmes will be recorded as their achievements and honors. A student’s accomplishments are not judged by academics alone, rather their unique experiences and talents are taken into account as well. This system aimed to stimulate students’ active participation in numerous activities. “With time, none of your efforts will go to waste. Be passionate and determined in your goals.” She encouraged the students one last time.
The President of the Graduation Committee, Kwan Jia Huey, was next to speak during the assembly. She introduced the list of the committee members and the work accomplished thus far. She also announced the theme for Class of 2021 Senior 3 Graduation,《熠》, and the Graduation Song 《破晓》, which won the popular vote. Preparation for graduation events was a challenge for the Committee as tasks were generally being planned and completed online. It was a race against time, but help from teachers and cooperation from students ensured that everything would be done flawlessly on time.
