The Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) exam is one of the most crucial milestones for high school students in Malaysia. With just over 90 days remaining until the SPM trials for Senior Middle Two students, the Academic Department decided to take proactive measures. On June 22, 2024, they played a video introducing the book “Exam Brain Science” by Dr. Yuji Ikegaya, which was summarised in the video by Dr. Fan Deng. This initiative aimed to provide Senior 2 students with effective techniques and strategies to enhance their exam preparation.

The first technique presented in the video is spaced repetition, a method that involves reviewing study materials at systematic intervals. Initially, the intervals are spaced closely together, then gradually lengthened over time. This approach helps store information as long-term memories in students’ brains. Additionally, output is crucial for the success of this technique. Students are encouraged to practice a variety of questions while studying to reinforce their learning.
The next technique focuses on understanding and managing your emotions. It is scientifically proven that we remember information more easily when we are interested in it. Maintaining a sense of curiosity can increase our interest in certain subjects, thereby enhancing our memory.

The third and final technique shared is the “Lion Memory Technique.” Studies have shown that memory can be improved through incorporating movement, being in a slightly cold environment, or experiencing hunger. Therefore, the video suggested that students study before dinner when their stomachs are empty and also while walking or commuting.

Additional insights were provided, such as the idea that motivation often follows the initiation of a task rather than preceding it, which is a common misconception in society. The majority of students showed great interest in the topics discussed. Overall, this program was highly beneficial to the Senior Two students, and we look forward to their performance in the upcoming SPM.
