On 3rd August 2021, the Counselling Department organised a talk on the development of the logistics industry in Malaysia as part of a series of Career Week talks. Mr Vincent Low from J&T Express, a logistics company, was invited to give students a talk about his career as an operations manager.

The session started off with our guest speaker introducing himself and his brief 3-year career at J&T Express (August 2018-Present). He then played a simple video regarding the expansion of logistics companies in Malaysia and their contribution to our country’s economy presented by the Association of Malaysian Express Carrier (AMEC) .

Next up Vincent showed us a map that displayed the J&T Express coverage area which included most parts in Malaysia. Students were amazed to learn that J&T Express has up to 540 drop points all over Malaysia. Since J&T Express is a newly established company, Vincent also pointed out the distinctive features of their company that led J&T Express to stand out among the other local logistics companies. These features were namely their 24-hour customer service, operating 365 days a year, and their provision of door-to-door service.

Unfortunately, the company has faced quite a lot of challenges during the pandemic. The increasing number of people shopping online requires the courier service to be up and active, and with fewer staff left to deal with the rising amount of packages, it is a challenge indeed. Couriers have also been forbidden to enter some residential areas without following certain safety measures, such as wearing protective clothing, gloves and safety glasses.

Difficulties faced by the couriers

Despite the challenges faced, the progress and accomplishments Vincent had achieved with his team motivates him to push through and proceed further in his field of work. Vincent stated that as an entrepreneur, we must not always expect to receive consolation from others when encountering setbacks as we are on our own in our career.

Before ending the talk Mr Vincent Low expressed his thoughts on the evolution of the logistics industry for the years yet to come. He felt optimistic for the future prospects of the logistics industry in the upcoming years as courier services are frequently required in our daily lives.

A group photo was taken and that was the end of this meaningful and interesting talk.
