Kuen Cheng High School students of Senior1 and Senior 2 Arts and Commerce Class have the privilege of attending a talk on 22 June 2019 by Mr Fang Lu, renowned Malaysian Chinese writer as well as a senior reporter for our local Chinese newspaper, Sin Chew Daily. Fang Lu has been frequent recipient for many literary awards, both from his home country and around the region. And, one of his awarded short stories has been selected and added into our textbook. Purpose of the talk today is to teach students to write interesting short stories by using different techniques and to prepare students for the upcoming Kuen Cheng Xiao Sheng Chinese Literature Contest, a short story competition.

He began the talk by introducing his connection with Kuen Cheng High School andhow he met with our former Principal, Madam Gooi Swee Gaik and the Chairman of the Board of Directors, the late Tan Sri Dato’ Lee Shin Cheng. He continued to do a brief introduction about himself and his life in writing. He began the topic by asking students to guess the different type of short stories, names that have been used in other countries. Students gave the answers correctly had been awarded with his novel, sponsorship by Tan Sri Lee.

Moving on, Fang Lu has explained the basic rules and techniques of writing a short story well. He used the example from his Nai Mi. Students were given chances to read his awarded short stories and how different techniques had been applied. Students were amazed and had expressed how interesting the storyline was.

Many students and teachers showed great interest by raising questions relating to writing skills, and were fascinated by the answers provided by Fang Lu. The participants approached Fang Lu to take photos and sign on his books before they left the auditorium. Students were thankful, filled with writing knowledge and fully prepared to participate in the forthcoming contest.
