To nurture a better commanding of the English skills among our students, the school has throughout the years designed a series of activities and contests to meet the goal. An English Learning Activity cum Contest has been carried out on the Learning Activity Day of 13 July 2019. It was named English Awareness Campaign Station Games.

Madam Chong of MML initiated the campaign and Ms Malar was in charge of the running of the project. The activities and contests simultaneously introduced during the day have covered all 6Cs principles in education, namely Coordination, Cooperation, Collaboration, Communication, Creativity, and Critical Thinking.

Immediately after the schoolwide English Creative Writing Competition held earlier in the day, Senior One students made their way down to the ball courts, car park, Block A lobby and front of the hall to participate in the fun event. A total of six activities have been carefully designed and planned to achieve the desired result. They are, respectively, Ice-Breaking Chariot Race, Chain Reaction, Unscrambling Anagrams, Puzzles, Newspaper in Education and the Fun Quiz.

The games involved 3 classes and 5 teachers controlling the chaos in one area; 6 teams from each class. After the logistical nightmares were sorted out and the rules were briefed, the station games kicked off at 10:30 a.m. First off was the Ice-breaking Chariot Race game, which was basically a fun game of Telephone. Students chuckled at the humorous statements being passed down while transferring the message as swiftly as possible.

After that was the Chain Reaction game, which some students may remember being a competition from past English Months. Students were puzzled while coming up with increasingly ridiculous words that led to monstrously bizarre phrases. Teamwork was truly valuable in this game as it required some serious mental gymnastics.

The students’ vocabulary skill was truly tested in the Unscrambling Anagrams game, where students tried to rearrange the chains of jumbled letters into actual words. The increasing length and complexity of the words made it more of a challenge for most of the students.

Papers having Word Puzzles printed on them were distributed for the next game.  This game went easier on the students as it only involved looking for words in a giant table of letters.

The next game was the NiE (Newspaper in Education) Scavenger Hunt. Once again, another blast from the past, this past English Month favorite had students tearing through a newspaper looking for items to complete their objectives, which ranged from spelling out the principal’s name to finding a picture with a funny caption on it. This certainly was the most time taxing of all the games, since 20 something items had to be found in a single newspaper in 40 minutes. Once again, teamwork was highly valued in this game for progress to flow smoothly. Last but not least, seemingly simple Fun Quiz with deceptive answers that incited many sighs from students wrapped up the games; good time always seems to come to an end much too quickly.

Overall, the contests and games were a major success. Unlike most station games which involved the nightmare of getting extremely large group of students rotating from one station to another, these games were under perfect control since students stayed at their own respective areas in good order. It was certainly not an experience to be missed for most students have hectically finished their tasks throughout the entire games with full commitment. It was a day to remember in learning English!
