If you have been here long enough, for sure you will remember the school old library situated on top of an old building. It definitely gave off an old, antique and mysterious vibe that made it a magical place. Looking back, it was a beautiful once upon a time, a place which offers tranquility and serenity… However it could hold no more than 20 people and that was certainly not enough the ever growing number of students we have here so the school made an important and crucial decision to build us a new one.

Before reaching its final form, the library transformed into a temporary room that did its best to provide as much knowledge and comfort for students. Then, the anticipation for our current library had been building up for years until it was finally ready. We are sure most of our students here are already familiar with our library that is situated above our canteen. However what many are unaware of are the changes and improvement since the end of the year 2019, so let us tell you all about them right here!

The school librarians along with other teachers made tremendous efforts to encourage students to build a habit of reading and that inspired the reading corner brought to us since the previous year. There are many reading corners all around school like outside the canteen and at the parking lot. It is extremely thoughtful as students usually spend time at these places to wait and with waiting comes boredom so why not spend those extra minutes reading? The library even updates books from time to time to ensure students never get bored and will still get that excited gleam in their eyes when a book title catches their eye. Students and teachers are always encouraged to add more books to the collection!

Besides the increase in size of the library, our existing double story library has given us an opportunity to display more books to let students immerse in a sea of knowledge. For example, the English section of the library had recently been enlarged, now with more shelves lining the walls. At the start of 2020, a series of books have been added to our library and recently there is an activity called “A blind date with a book” where a selection of books has been covered up on their front cover so that, physically, people would not judge the book by its cover. The response from students was overwhelming and the activity ended in the first week.

Some improvement had also been carried out by the library during this year where students are not allowed to put their bags randomly on the ground, at the library entrance, for the sake of tidiness. Then, students who often frequent the library had also stated that the change to LED lights helped students stay awake while studying and make better progress. Apart from that, a study lounge ready with bright and colorful reading tables and chairs are also provided right in front of the library to offer a space for people who like to organise study groups so that they are allowed to hold discussions while studying there.

Special allocations such as the college information nook, bulletin boards on both in and outside of the library display latest update about further studies; essay writing competitions and its promotional leaflets are also available for those who are interested. There is also a pillar of different monthly magazines which students can now borrow, for example Reader’s Digest as well as other Chinese and Malay magazines. From time to time, students’ art works are also being displayed in the library to encourage students to work hard on their passionate hobby.

A Senior Three student librarian, Loke Kar Men commented on the improvement of the library ever since she became a Junior One student here. The library had moved from the old block, then to the temporary one at the music room, until now it’s in its grandeur at the new block as a two floor well-equipped library. The library also has a lot more activities compared to before. The participants not only include students as librarian but also teachers. She further mentioned that the environment of the library is now very comfortable and well lit. Lastly, she hopes that this new and improved library can help students to relax and enjoy more on reading and studying.

Kuen Cheng is definitely always looking for new ideas and ways to improve the students’ learning environment as well as the facility. The library would be the best evidence for that. If you have not visited the library in a while, GO and explore it soonest as you can!
