     In order to enhance the communication between group members and cultivate communication skills of group members, Kuen Cheng Girls Guides held a communication skills training camp on 10th of June (Thursday) at 4:30 pm. The person in charge of the same day invited Madam Chong Lee Ying from the Counseling Department to give the girls a talk about skills of communication. First of all, Madam Chong entered the topic through an interactive way, she kindly asked the girls to listen well, moved their seats so that they can be connected, and they should be facing eye to eye, a basic respect for the speaker. According to Madam Chong, communication can be “the passage of ideology and information”, “the concept or mindset is passed by one person to another, or is a person’s own delivery, its purpose is to communicate. People have learned ideological understanding.”, “the behavior of exchanging information” or “people or groups mainly transmit information, ideas, attitudes, or emotions to other people or groups through symbols.”

From communication definition, we can simply summarize communication as follows:

  • ● Explain things, transfer information, people understand, people accept;

  • ● Get information, understand other people, and make guarantees for the right decisions;

  • ● Communicate emotions, improve relationships;

  • ● Unify thinking, create a team spirit, improve job morale.

     Madam Chong also mentioned that the category of communication will be formed into formal communication, informal communication, single communication, two-way communication, meeting questions, and individual conversations. If we have to improve communication skills, we must first understand others and let the other person know what we have understood. Not only that, we also need to break the obstacles and join our ideas together to find the right solutions. When communicating with someone at a time, don’t talk to others and move away attention, we should choose appropriate channels of communication. The last most important skill is to learn to listen.

     Madam Chong has mentioned that when others talk, we can gently make an appropriate response. Our eyes should look at him or her and avoid doing other movements. This will let him or her feel that you are listening to him or her seriously, and feel your respect. We can use little words to express their own meaning, repeating the last few words of the speaker just mentioned, indicating that the speaker means what the speaker means. At the same time, we also need to make a real response, let him or her feel that you have really evaluated him or her, so that it is convenient to communicate with each other. Madam Chong gives the girls good guidance and brings forward benefits of a successful communication.

     After that, a debate activity was conducted by Tan Yi Wen, the Vice President of the Kuen Cheng Girl Guides —— “Debate never changes our Relationship!” There are two topics on the day of debate, the first topic of the first representative is “Communication is more important than ability in work” and the topic of the second representative is “Ability is more important than communication in work”. The other topic of the first representative is “Network communication is better than face-to-face communication” and the second representative of the second topic is “Face-to-face communication is better than network communication”. Every group will have four members and a facilitator, in addition to the debate, the person in charge of the activity also adds an extra point behind the debate, each team needs to select an MVP inside the team, the points can also be achieved in the following plus competition.

     At the end of the debate, there is also a game section where the girls enjoy taking part very much. We believe that the girls must have spent a very pleasant afternoon, not only to learn the skills, but also to connect with each other.
