Before pandemic, there were many physical activities held in the School on Saturdays that encourage independent learning. Things changed, with movement restriction order in force, online learning activities replaced instead. According to our Principal, Dr Chua Lee Lee, self-directed, online activities require students to think about their learning objectives, also on things that they like to learn. They will build self-determination and time management skills. An online learning portal called Ewant is thus introduced as a supplementary resource.

All students were requested to turn on their webcam device during the entire Talk. Madam Chua first hoped to highlight challenges that students will be facing in the 21st century. As economic and social changes directly affecting livelihood of individuals, Madam Chua thinks a school should be assisting and preparing students to get ready for the unknown future, drastic development and changes of technology. She further encouraged students to step forward and take control of learning with their own initiatives, and be an independent learner.

Up next, Madam Chua took this opportunity to highlight her concern regarding the commitment of students in the learning as well as performing well in both Chinese Language and Chinese Literature subjects, in terms of the SPM Exam. As an Independent Chinese Secondary School, we obtain privilege and convenience in having the complete set of teaching and learning of Chinese. She shared her view and the MOE analysis of last year’s SPM result, candidates and the subjects taken in 2019. Madam Chua raised her concern and showed respect towards students of Indian ethnicity. A total of 30.94% of students out from the Tamil Language subject took the Tamil Literature Paper in the Exam, but, only 3.37% of students that took Chinese Language subject over in the Exam participated in the Chinese Literature Paper. Given such a tough and difficult condition in fighting for proper Tamil education and yet their students managed and did their best in the Exam with a promising result. They deserve better. But anyhow, out of the 1740 candidates nationwide that took the Chinese Literature subject, 750 (43.1%) of them were students from Kuen Cheng High School. She reiterated the importance of protecting our Chinese language and literature in order to preserve the cultural heritage in Malaysia. Young students of Kuen Cheng High School must show their strong will and put into action by doing the Chinese subjects with full confidence.

Soon after the Principal’s speech, our Computer Teacher began on introducing Ewant, taught us how to register and use the resource. And, he further explained the academic record and percentage of marks or course points to be calculated for the upcoming 2nd Semester. All students welcomed the new implementation, expressed their interest and excitement, and also indicated the commitment to studying with their own initiatives through the new online education platform.
