The outbreak of COVID-19 doesn’t have to be the reason for you to call a halt to all of your outdoor fun. If you haven’t engaged in any outdoor activities due to the pandemic, this is the best opportunity for you and your friends to take part in fun outdoor events!

Kuen Cheng High School Committee on COVID-19 Prevention will be hosting the KC Rundemic, a sports event that will be taking place coming June. Thus, you can grab the opportunity to keep fit. For this special occasion, the Broadcasting Club members interviewed the person-in-charge of KC Rundemic, Wong En Hui from Sr2B on 22nd April 2022.

What is the aim for hosting KC Rundemic?

The pandemic has restricted many outdoor activities in the past two years, and has this undoubtedly weakened our body immune system. Nevertheless, immunity is so crucial in fighting against diseases. Hence, I would like to take this opportunity to let all teachers, students, family members and friends go in for sports. Exercises like hiking and running can improve one’s immunity, and make us feel more relieved. Of course, by exercising, you can also temporarily escape from the world of study and relieve all your stress. As the saying goes, “To rest is to prepare for a longer journey ahead.”

Can you briefly describe in what way the KC Rundemic is held?

Our event will be held from 5th June to 12th June 2022, except for the 10-kilometer race which will be held alone on 11th June 2022. Since everyone’s schedule is so different, the event is available for one week long so that everyone can do the run anytime, and they just have to complete the run before the deadline. On the other hand, the contestants of the 10-kilometer race are specially required to complete it within one day to make the competition fair and square. Only people who did the best under the same circumstances can win the competition. After completing your run, you just have to submit a Google form, attaching your electronic running bib number, running data screenshot, photo before and after your run along with your personal data.

It’s the first time I’ve heard of an online running event, how did the committee come up with this innovative idea?
Actually, Kuen Cheng High School had already organised many offline sports events in the past, and online running events have become the new normal in many off-campus institutions, so I don’t believe KC Rundemic to be a unique, completely brand new programme, and we certainly can’t take all the credit. Our aim was and is to help Kuen Cheng students to maintain a happy, healthy lifestyle under the current conditions, and to work out without causing clusters.

Did you face any difficulties while organising this event?

Well, I wouldn’t call them difficulties, they were more like challenges. The T-shirts and medals were custom made, so we needed to look for and contact the most suitable manufacturer. That process alone ate up a lot of time, but we were very pleased with our final choice. In addition, by finding a few sponsors, the registration fee was greatly lowered, and our participants are going to enjoy the event without worrying about the financial burden.

What are your thoughts on this event?

The committee worked hard and put in a lot of time and energy into planning the KC Rundemic. In order to coordinate our information and decide on everything, we had to meet up nearly once every week. All of the effort was for our participants and supporters to thoroughly enjoy the event, and to gain new experiences and memories. I’ve mentioned the T-shirts and medals earlier. Truth be told, both of them were designed by members of the committee, and they provided us with many different and fantastic designs. The final design was chosen by the rest of the committee and the teachers-in-charge via voting. I think the medals will be the highlight of the event as its design is not only unique but also very meaningful, so that’s something our participants can look forward to.
With that, the interview with Wong En Hui came to an end. Students, staff members or families of students are most welcome to join in the bandwagon, and should visit Kuen Cheng Monitor Club’s Facebook to learn more about the KC Rundemic. On your mark, GET SET, READY, GO!
