From 6th to 8th June 2021, the Chinese Debate Club organised a camp online using the Zoom platform. The camp was open for members of the club only with about 50 participants, including the members of the English Debate Club.

The camp aimed to improve the relationship between members and the members’ debate skills. Apart from that, the Chinese Debate Club will also have the opportunity to get in touch with the debate club members from Chong Hwa Independent High School of Kuala Lumpur and Chung Ling High School of Penang.

On the first day, the Club had two friendly debate matches with Chong Hwa Independent High School where each school sent four members to form a team and debate with each other.

The first topic was about whether the internet’s opinion would encourage people to think in different ways or just one way, with Chong Hwa Independent High School being the proposition and Kuen Cheng High School being the opposition. The second round had members debating the topic: “In this era, should we encourage young people to step out of their comfort zone?” The two schools exchanged their positions in this match.

The first day ended with a joint game’s session with the English Debate Club members. The two Clubs’ members played games such as using emojis to guess words, taking group pictures with a certain pose or action within the breakout rooms, and guessing words based off whiteboard drawing. It was a wonderful time as the relationship between members of English and Chinese Debate Clubs improved.

On the second day, a friendly debate match with Chung Ling High School was held. The topics from day one was reused but with our School holding the opposite position. After every match, the coach gave her comments on each position’s content. There were no winners as this was a friendly match.

During the last day, the coach of the debate club held a discussion about last week’s debate topic. She mentioned that we should see topics from different perspectives to better form our speech content and to guess what content our opponent would use. She commented on the points that were used by the members by breaking them into small parts and pointing out its strengths and weaknesses. The members learned a lot from the discussion and realized what they needed to improve.

The camp ended with members learning more about debate skills and forming new friendships through debating with other schools’ members.
