Chinese school system in Malaysia has come about only through blood, sweat, tears and the sheer political will of the Chinese community in this country to defend their mother tongue education. Indeed, this achievement by Chinese Malaysians is a worthy national pride. On the 12th of June 2021 from 1pm to 2pm, in conjunction with the Online Co-curricular Carnival, Kuen Cheng Chinese Society held a quiz on the knowledge of Chinese education in Malaysia. The objective of this event is to enable students and teachers to acknowledge the contribution and nurturing by the community to Independent Chinese Schools since their inception in the nineteenth century.
Participants were given an 83-page nous manual during their contest registration and required to study in advance in order to complete the 50 questions quiz.
Before starting, the Chinese Society members explained the rules: contestants have to finish answering within 45 minutes via Testportal. Anyone who exceeds the time limit will be disqualified. With that, the quiz contest started off smoothly.
Participants strive as hard as possible to complete the quiz within that 45 minutes. Soon after, the Chinese Society members explained that 13 winners will be chosen in line with the scores.
Towards the end, the club members thanked the students for their active participation. Being a Chinese student, we should always be grateful to be educated in Kuen Cheng.
In an interview with one of the participants, Huang Jing Kang, from JR1Z1 stated that his experience in the competition was eye-opening as it improved his understanding of the history of Chinese education. He added that he decided to join this competition as he wanted to broaden his knowledge by acquiring new experiences. When asked what he took away from the experience, he responded with “We should be grateful for having Chinese education because it is part of our roots”.
In another interview, Lai Choo Rey, from JR1Z1 stated that he found the questions tough as they were very complicated. However, he also said that he wanted to join this competition because he wanted to increase his knowledge on the subject of Chinese education. In his final statements, he remarked that he realised that Chinese education had so much history from this competition. He also took the chance to learn about the history of Independent Chinese Secondary Schools and SMJK, the National type.
