Through months of hard work, competing classes of Kuen Cheng High School’s 2022 Class Choir Competition made their way towards the finals where the selected finalists were required to perform up on stage. On the 5th of December, the School’s Music Subject Department held the finale of the Senior Category Class Choir Competition at the Auditorium with other classes bearing witness through a live YouTube broadcast in each classroom.
The competition started around 1:00 p.m. with an opening speech by the Vice Principal, Madam Koo Lai Ping, who praised the students’ hard work and showed gratitude towards the music teachers for organising the event. The judges were then introduced by the emcees of the competition.

Starting off with the Senior Middle One classes, the first class to compete was Sr1ScB, singing 2 merged song, namely 《知足》 and 《突然好想你》, both by Mayday. Next up was Sr1ComA with the song “How Far I’ll Go” sung by Auli’i Cravalho in the movie Moana. The class of Sr1A then performed 《心墙》 which was originally sung by Claire Kuo.
Moving on were the Senior Middle Two students, Sr2ScB being the first of the bunch, singing a mix of both Mandarin and Cantonese songs. Thereafter was Sr2ScJ with a Japanese song titled “千の風になって A Thousand Winds” by Man Arai.

Then, there was a brief intermission, where Jr3Z4’s submission for the 2022 Class Choir MV Competition was played. The video featured Jr3Z4’s students singing Jay Chou’s “Rice Field”.
Following the intermission, Sr2ComA took the stage to perform a medley of “Main Character” by Bell Yu Tian, “High Hopes” and “First Day” by Stefanie Sun. The students of Sr2A also performed a medley, featuring S.H.E’s “Seventeen”, Beyond’s 《真的爱你》 and Rihanna’s “Diamonds”.

Then were the Sr3 students’ performances, with Sr3ScA performing a catchy self-composed song titled 《愿你一直bling bling》. Finally, Sr3ScE performed a medley of “The Song of Laughter and Forgetting” and “Cheers” by Mayday, “To Youth 2021” by Ariel Tsai and “Seventeen”.

During the intermission, Jr2Z2’s submission for the Class Choir MV Competition was played. They performed a medley of “Cheers”, “Memories”, 《听妈妈的话》 and “A Million Possibilities”.
Then, the judges gave their comments on everyone’s performances. Guest judge Ms. Chung Yi Ling talked about the importance of creativity in choir performances, and that when it comes to singing voices, sometimes less is more. Second guest judge, Dr. Tan, provided feedback on students’ song choices for choir and encouraged contrasts in volume or timbre during performances. Finally, Madam Hee Siaw Fuey praised participants for their creative performances, and looked forward to seeing even better choir performances from students in the future.

The Excellence Award of the Choir Competition went to Sr2A and Sr1ScB, while the Creativity Award went to Sr1ComA. The champion, runner-up and second runner-up of the competition were Sr2ScJ, Sr1ComA and Sr1A respectively.
With that, the highly-anticipated Class Choir Competition drew to a close! To conclude this prestigious event, here are some words from the Head of Music Subject Department, Ms Wong Sheau Hui:
“After two years, our students have finally been given the opportunity to portray their talents up on stage through the class choir competition. They’ve truly brought us a relishing and refreshing competition! It’s a special opportunity to witness the talents of each class, whether winning or otherwise, it’s truly a great experience and memory! Our students are really amazing! Apart from that, thank you to all the staff members, teachers and judges.😊”
