Getting into CNY mood with the CNY Song Teacher-Student Choir Competition

On January 17, 2025, the Kuen Cheng High School Chinese New Year (CNY) Committee organized a series of vibrant celebrations to welcome the festive season. The event kicked off with a mesmerizing lion dance performance by the school’s Dragon and Lion Dance Club, setting the stage for an exciting day.
Following the energetic performance, the emcee welcomed the esteemed judges: Madam Loh Hoi Yuen, Ms. Wong Sheau Hui, and Ms. How Xiang Yun. The highlight of the celebration was the CNY Song Teacher-Student Choir Competition, held at the school’s basketball court.
The first group, led by Madam Hee Siaw Fuey, captivated the audience with a lively CNY medley featuring “Celebrate” (庆祝), “Reunion” (大团圆), and “Big Day” (大日子). Their performance set a joyful and festive mood. Next, Madam Lai Yan Qiu and her students took the stage with a heartfelt rendition of “Winter Jasmine” (迎春花), which was met with enthusiastic cheers and loud support from the crowd.
Next, a four-person group presented “North-South Expressway”(南北大道), followed by 2 groups who sang “Reunion”(大团圆). The audience had a blast as Mr. Chu Zhi Kang hyped up the crowd by passing the microphone to students he knew in the crowd. Ms. Chow Pui Fong on the other hand, passed out candies to the crowd, creating some memorable moments.

As the judges deliberated and tallied the scores, the audience was treated to a breathtaking Bian Lian (变脸) performance, a traditional face-changing act from Sichuan, China opera. With every swift and seamless mask change, teachers and students erupted into applause, marveling at the artistry and skill behind the performance. When the final mask was removed, revealing the talented performer behind the magic, the crowd broke into thunderous applause, marking a spectacular end to the show.

Finally, the much-anticipated results were announced. Honourable mentions were awarded to Mr. Chu’s group and Ms. Lim’s group. Madam Hee’s group secured third place, while Ms. Chow’s group took second place. The champion of this year’s CNY Song Teacher-Student Choir Competition was Madam Lai’s group, whose energetic and heartfelt performance won over the judges and audience alike.
Beyond the competition, this event not only brought festive cheer but also strengthened the bond between teachers and students, fostering a spirit of unity and celebration. Wishing everyone good health and great success in 2025!
