Leara (Ku Leara Binti Ku Sairy), student of Jr1M(4), hailing from a Chinese-based primary school, is no stranger to the Chinese language, having started her studies in Chinese since kindergarten. Her parents, both Malay, decided to send her to a Chinese school, inspired by her older sister’s experience at Kuen Cheng High School. Her sister is none other than Ku Shyreen Binti Ku Sairy (Sr1ComE), one of our students featured in this Ethnic Bonds Harmony Initiative series. It has always been the parents’ dream for their children to study in independent Chinese secondary schools and interact with students from various races. Leara believes that attending an independent Chinese high school will provide her with discipline and more choices in the future.

A moment during the interview

Initially, Leara perceived that studying at an independent Chinese high school would be stressful. However, she later discovered that this was not the case. With the support of her teachers and classmates, she made significant improvements over the past few months. She appreciates how the teachers communicate in both English and Malay, which helps students understand better. Leara feels that she is learning many valuable lessons, particularly the significance of manners in daily life, which embodies the traditional cultural values treasured by Chinese.

Discussing school life

When it comes to making new friends, Leara reported having no issues fitting in, as she is naturally extroverted. She found it easy to make friends simply by saying “hi” or asking for help with homework. Furthermore, she noted that the teachers are very kind and supportive. She is really impressed by one of her teachers who helped clear up a misunderstanding among her classmates.

Leara enjoys the co-curricular activities at Kuen Cheng High School and expressed a desire to join the French Club. However, due to the additional agama (religious) classes offered at the school, she ultimately chose to participate in the Environmental Society instead.

In conclusion, Leara enthusiastically encourages students of all races to consider enrolling in Chinese secondary schools for a better education and discipline. She believes that one should not let societal perceptions restrict their choices. She appreciates that Kuen Cheng High School offers special classes for students whose averages fall below 55, allowing them the opportunity to improve. Leara ended the interview with a message for those unfamiliar with Kuen Cheng High School: “People often hesitate to enter Kuen Cheng High School because of fear for stress at school homework. However, stress is an inherent part of every school experience.” Leara strongly added that “Kuen Cheng is an ideal place for a Journey of Growth and Friendship.”
