It was during Sports Day when the students and teachers of Kuen Cheng High School were able to get a first look at the official graduation T-shirt worn by the Class of 2023. Upon closer inspection, the Senior Middle Three T-shirt consisted of designs of ocean waves and a unique logo.

A First Look from Kuen Cheng’s Sports Day

In order to further understand the idea behind the designs and overall process, the Kuen Cheng Newsletter Club decided to interview the Graduation Committee Design Team, which consists of the following members:

  • – Chong Su Wen, Sr3ScA
  • – Lin Zhe Yuen, Sr3ScB
  • – Lee Xin Yi, Cindy, Sr3ScC
  • – Lim Tao Shen, Sr3ScD
  • – Hoong Tian Xin, Sr3ComA
  • – Natalie Lim Yu Jye, Sr3ComB
  • – Chow Hui Xin, Sr3ComC
  • – Lim Yong Jian, Sr3ComD
  • – Wong Xin Ning, Sr3A
  • – Soo Cheng Mun, Sr3B (Head of Design Team)

The designs on the graduation T-shirt were mainly split into 2 different sections, namely the logo and the comic-like graphic design on the back. For the selected product, the logo was designed by a single committee member while another 4 were in charge of the graphic design. There were also different designs made for each part, but weren’t selected by the majority vote within the graduating classes.

Within the graphic design group, it was admitted that it was mostly only 2 of the 4 members who did the designing, while the other 2 helped to search for ideas and inspiration online. However, their research proved to be helpful when starting off with the sketches as they were able to find useful references. It was via this research that they were able to come up with a design symbolising the students’ dreams, future, braveness, auspiciousness, strength and unity.

Their graduation theme was “Shimmering Dance”《粼·舞》(“Shimmering” referring to light shining off the surface of water), indicating a strong ocean-based theme. Although the committee did feel like the theme was slightly overused, they weren’t in charge of the theme selection and could only go along with ocean-based designs. Fortunately, the finished products came out perfectly fine.

They mentioned opting for a slightly comic-like design as past designs have always been more free-form rather than following a box-like structure, aiming to bring a sense of modernity to their designs as well.

One of the toughest challenges they faced regarding the project itself was the due date. They only had around 2 weeks to finalise the graduation T-shirt design before it was voted on. They even faced issues with the T-shirt manufacturing company in terms of colour printing choices. Given the circumstances, they were still quite satisfied with the final product.

Of course, they also went through a few ups and downs within the committee itself. They learnt a lot regarding communication, especially because they had to discuss amongst themselves and with the teacher-in-charge too. It took a while to explain and discuss proposals along with updating their work progress. There were also minor disagreements within the committee itself as they didn’t have time to get to know each other before starting their work.

Thankfully, everything worked out in the end, and even those whose products didn’t get selected expressed their slight disappointment but overall acceptance in the matter as they were proud of their work either way.

That being said, we sincerely thank the Graduation Committee Design Team for their efforts and work. We look forward to seeing more wonderful designs by the design team as we progress further into the year!
