There’s no doubt that Chinese New Year celebrations aren’t complete without festive decorations to set the atmosphere. That’s where arts and crafts come in handy. With Ms Ong Sook Wan, the Head of the Art Department in Kuen Cheng High School, leading the 《好运兔YOU》“Luckiness Tù YOU” Paper Decoration Cutting Workshop on the 16th of January 2023, students were given the opportunity to cut out their own red rabbits using red calligraphy paper.

The workshop was held after school around 3:30pm until 5:15pm with approximately 30 participants gathered in the library. After a short introduction by one of the library teachers, Ms Ong started off by displaying the two different rabbit-themed designs that participants could choose to cut out, one being bilaterally symmetrical and the other being quadrilaterally symmetrical.

Then, the teachers distributed red calligraphy paper to each participant based on which design they chose. The participants started off by tracing the designs from the given templates before cutting them out. They were allowed to use scissors and box cutters, the latter being provided by the teachers. Ms Ong also reminded the students to cut out the details starting from the ones near the middle of the paper. She even went around each table helping out participants with their decorations.

Student’s Work

It wasn’t long before some students finished their decorations. Those who managed to finish in time were allowed to hang their decorations on the library’s notice board as well. The workshop was then dismissed after a quick group photo.
