Then came a motivational speech by one of their lecturers, Mr. Lew Tau Fei. He talked about his past experiences along with the various fine art awards he has won overseas.
Moving on to the main activities, all participants were split into 2 groups. The first group participated in a Recycle Paper Making Workshop, conducted by Mr. Kim Ng. Participants were walked through the process by watching a demonstration. A paper mache was used in the process, repurposing pieces of paper into said paper mache. The paper mache was to be compressed in a wooden frame by hand and dried on the designated spots.

After a quick lunch break, the first group moved on to their take on the Collage Portrait Illustration Workshop. After the brief introduction, participants split into groups of 5-6. The groups were then given their subjects, namely Datuk Lee Chong Wei and Charlie Chaplin to name a few. An abundance of materials were also provided. Each of the groups had fun creating their masterpieces. The whole room was filled with laughter.

At the same time, the second group was given the opportunity to try out Wood Cut Printmaking, which was conducted by Mr. Kim Ng. A brief explanation was given before participants started carving out their illustrations on a piece of wood (referred to as a “matrix”) using chisels. This proved to be a tough and lengthy process as it was their first time carving wood. Later on, participants had to swatch their matrix with printing ink before pressing their illustrations onto paper using a printing press machine. Their products were left to dry in the academy and would be returned to them in around a week’s time.

At 3:45p.m., all participants gathered in the auditorium once more as a member of the marketing team collected their feedback. After filling the forms, participants were led to a gallery showcasing artworks created by the students of the academy.
After viewing the many pieces of meaningful artwork, the buses came to fetch the participants back to the school. All boarded the buses whilst chatting about the wonderful day they had at Dasein Academy. It was a day worth reminiscing.
