Over the holidays, Kuen Cheng’s Debate Club decided to hold a training camp on both the 29th and 30th of May 2023. Both the Chinese and English side of the debate club were involved in the camp. However, the following article will be written with emphasis on the English side.

At 8:00a.m., all the club members were split into 2 rooms as the emcees explained the theme of the camp, which was 《话海》 Flower of Words (emphasis on “Flow” in Flower” to symbolise how words flow like ocean tides during a debate).

Music-Guessing Game

Then came a games session where club members were split into different groups. The first game was a music-guessing game where players were tasked with guessing the song title based on the audio played.

Following up, each group got to pick their acting props for the next game, which was 《坤辩有 Talent·百花齐放》 B100ming Talents, an acting game where each group had to plan and act out a scene based on the prompts given.

Many groups incorporated singing and dancing into their scenes and as the judges gave their verdict, the losers were subjected to a punishment given by the winners. The first group danced to “Baby Shark” while the second danced to 《我们一起学猫叫》”Let’s Learn to Meow Together”.

After the games ended, it was time for the debates. The Chinese and English sides split up into their own classrooms and started training. The English groups debated on the theme of “education” before lunch, followed by “healthcare” before leaving at 3:00p.m.

“Education” Themed Motions

On the second day, the debates continued on with the themes “social relationships” and “media”. As the Juniors prepared for the debate, they were guided by designated seniors.

After lunch, two special debates on the theme “philosophy” were held. The Seniors, along with alumni and the coach debated against each other in the two rounds while the juniors spectated.

Overall, the camp was a success and everyone had fun. The juniors learnt a lot not only from watching the seniors debate, but also debating themselves.
