A few months ago, Kuen Cheng High School Committee on COVID-19 Prevention held a mask designing competition (战 “疫”) for all students to participate. We are honoured to interview the person-in-charge of this competition, Chew Ern Tong.
Q1: What is the main purpose of organising this event?
战”疫” Mask Designing Competition is one of the competitions under Kuen Cheng High School’s COVID-19 Prevention activity. The main purpose is to let students design their own unique protective masks while letting their creativity run free. In the meantime, it allows students to realise that masks are common nowadays and raise awareness of COVID-19 prevention.
Q2: What are the difficulties that were faced during the preparation of the event? How is it resolved?
When the competition first started, there were not many participants as the students were busy studying for their exams. Therefore, we extended the due date from 31/5 to 12/6. We also sought help from the monitors to promote the competition in their respective classes.
Q3. What was learnt while preparing for the competition?
Personally, I learnt a lot regarding communication. That’s because while preparing for the competition, we need to communicate with other Committee Members and the teacher-in-charge about our ideas, update our work progress, discuss proposals and et cetera, so communication is definitely the main point here, as we need to communicate to resolve problems, work together to get the job done, and by that the competition went smoothly.
Q4: What attracted students to join the competition?
The awareness campaign itself draws attention and also because of the plentiful time. Students have more time and energy to let their creativity roam freely, and design according to their will after the exam week.
Q5: What are your thoughts on this competition? Are you happy with the outcome? Are they any improvements that need to be made?
In terms of the number of participants and quality of the work, we are very delighted and satisfied. At first, the Committee Members were worried that no one would join the competition, but the results were out of our expectations. We were amazed by the creativity and effort shown in their work.
Everything was fine except when the results were announced, there were some mistakes on the poster. We should double-check before posting the results to make sure the information is correct, especially the minor details.
Q6: Being in the post-pandemic era, will the competition be organized again in the coming year? Why?
There is a lot of uncertainty about this. If the pandemic is under control in the coming year, and wearing a mask has already been deep-rooted, then there is no need for this activity to be organized again, this is no doubt a good thing.
Last but not least, congratulations to all the winners! Here are the results of the competition.
