After a long wait, the 2021 JUEC results (Junior Unified Examination Certificate) have finally arrived. Kuen Cheng High School’s accomplished Junior Middle 3 students didn’t fail us, with a whopping 144 students achieving 6 to 8As, 11 students in particular with straight A’s. Let’s see what the top scorers have to say on this exciting news.

When Wen Qian first saw the results, he was taken aback and felt very relieved. Originally, he thought he could only achieve 6As, not expecting to get 8As in the exam. He thinks that the most important thing to success is to have a target.

Wen Qian created a timetable to plan his time between revisions and break time. This was so that when the JUEC was inching closer, he would not feel anxious and burn the midnight oil. He also jotted down key points during class and made extra notes for him to read before the exam.

He also paid attention when studying, which was especially hard during the pandemic. When learning at home, there were many temptations such as his handphone, so he took it away from his desk when studying. His daily study routine was: revise for 2 hours, have a break and repeat, which is quite similar to the Pomodoro technique. Wen Qian also cleans up his desk regularly, as it affects his study mood.

‘‘Where there’s a will, there’s a way’. When you get frustrated while preparing for exams or think that the course is too hard and feel like giving up, don’t! Try harder. If you persevere to the end and work hard, you will get your desired results.’

Jia Qi is satisfied and happy with her results, feeling that all her previous efforts were worth it. She went through the examination quite calmly and was surprised at first by the results.

After class, she will rest for half an hour then start revising for two hours, proceeding with a short rest. This is so that she will not feel too tired, as it affects her studying. Jia Qi doesn’t think that learning environments are very important whatsoever, because she admits that her desk isn’t quite neat as well. As long as she has helpful revision materials, she can revise efficiently.

She takes short and important notes without too many words because it will be quite meaningless to read paragraphs and paragraphs of text when you can grasp the whole topic through simple, jotted points. She also pointed out that drawing pictures prevents the notes from being boring.

Advice to everyone: ‘Do not feel pressured! Sit for your exams with a calm mind, and just do your best when preparing for exams. Try not to feel down even if your grades aren’t up to your expectations, what’s important is the whole learning process.’

Cecelia Wong See Seon Sr1A

Cecelia was shocked by her results, not expecting her efforts to lead to straight A’s. She thinks that her studying method is just like other students: paying attention in class, doing homework on time etc. She also writes extra information on textbooks and rereads her notes before exams.

Her daily workspace is her study table, despite being a little messy, she manages to focus and study. As for recommendations on studying apps, Cecelia recommends RemNote, which enables students to revise using flashcards, which she finds very convenient, especially when learning new vocabularies. ‘Participate in classes on time and try not to be distracted, and no matter how you dislike the subject, try to pay attention to the classes. Ask any relevant questions and try not to be shy. Most importantly, stay positive! Remember to find a balance between work and play, and do not collect too much stress from your studies.’

Kui Yen Qi Sr1ScA

‘Joyful’ is the perfect word to describe Yen Qi’s feelings when she first received the results, as she only expected to get 6As at most. She worked hard on revisions before the exams. However, she thinks that she got her good results thanks to sheer luck.

She thinks that she is more of a ‘sudden inspiration’ person when revising, so she doesn’t have a fixed study routine. For notes, she usually writes them in her textbooks, as it is easier to refer back. Yen Qi normally copies the important points for each subject and learns them by heart. She also does more past year papers, especially for the Mathematics subject. Besides revising, Yen qi also does group studies with friends. She recommends the app ‘Microsoft Math’ for mathematics questions. With the app, students can practice lots of questions and get step-by-step explanations.

Yen Qi hopes that the Juniors, especially this year’s Junior 3s, will not feel too strained due to examinations, and try to relax suitably. Not that examinations are not important, but they are just to test whether students have grasped the basics well enough, and will not cause a big difference in their future life. Most importantly, she advises students to take on the examinations bravely and hope that everyone will achieve their desired results.

Tham Jia Huey Sr1ScD

Jia Huey’s results weren’t quite expected, making her very surprised, and she admitted wondering whether they have been marked wrongly. Jia Huey said that her results weren’t really always the best, especially in Arts, and she only expected to get 2As (Mathematics and English). Therefore, the results came to her as a surprise.

After her tuition and practice sessions, Jia Huey will study with friends at night, ending with some chit-chat. Her normal study schedule depends on that day’s activities. If it was a normal day Jia Huey would put all her activities in the afternoon and study at night. Due to having a hectic schedule and participating in many activities at the start of the year, she was left with little time to study. She had to decide to wake up as early as 5:30 a.m. just to study in the last 3 weeks before the trials. Without much time available, she wrote down her notes as questions with standard answers and revised them when studying.

Jia Huey thinks that our learning environments affect our studies and that everyone’s ideal environment varies. Some prefer a quiet place to study such as in libraries, while others prefer slightly busy places, cafes for example. As for herself, Jia Huey will prepare a cup of warm Milo to motivate herself while studying.

She recommends “fayefilms”, a youtuber whose videos are mainly about studying tips, her study vlog inspired Jia Huey a lot. Jia Huey also recommends “FLIP”, which tracks her productivity and motivates her to reach her goals.

Jia Huey advises Juniors to work hard and believe in themselves. She believes that believing in yourself is one of the most important things you must have to achieve your goal. People work hard because they believe they will be able to do well by doing so and it eventually leads to their success.

We at the Newsletter Club would like to thank these students for finding time to attend our interview sessions and answer the questions patiently. We hope that after understanding and learning from these JUEC top scorers, everybody will work hard, and achieve their own goals! Good luck!
