On the 17th May 2021, Kuen Cheng High School alumna Yvonne Thew, who is currently studying radio and television direction at the Communication University of Zhejiang, and Choo Yih Chien, who is studying recording arts (sound production specialisation) at the Communication University of China had a sharing session about their universities and courses with Senior Middle Level students through Zoom.

Communication University of Zhejiang

First, Yvonne introduced her university and its surrounding areas. Established in 1978, it hosts two campuses connected via university-provided buses. Besides that, the university has up to 43 undergraduate courses open to international students, with 28 of them being arts courses.

The fees for courses are RM 11,200 per year for arts courses and RM 9,300 for normal courses. The estimated cost of studying at the university is about RM50,000 to RM 65,000 per year, excluding daily expenses. Scholarships will be provided for students who excel in their studies and co-curricular activities.

International students will attend classes with fellow students from abroad for their first year, and will merge classes with local students starting from the second. First year students will have classes on mass communication, traditional Chinese culture, and other general courses, and will begin their specialised courses in their second year.

Due to the pandemic, Yvonne was forced to attend online classes through platforms like Ding Ding, China MOOC and others. Activities in the university will also be held live so that students outside China can join the activities too. She stated that the university experience felt unrealistic because of the online classes and hopes to be able to attend physical classes in a near future.

Lastly, she mentioned that although she enrolled in arts specialities courses in the Communication University of Zhejiang, she did not need to hand in a related portfolio, which makes one’s resume and autobiography very important. She ended with a Q&A session.

Communication University of China

Choo Yih Chien first introduced her school: the Communication University of China. A prestigious public university with “211” and “985” titles, it boasts a large campus far from the city and is accessible by subway.

The university features two highly-regarded disciplines: Journalism and Communication and Theatre and Film Studies with many specializations. 50 undergraduate courses in fields like television presenting, sound direction, electronic music composition and animation are available for international students. School fees are 24,000RMB per year but the Beijing Municipal Government Scholarship for Foreign Students is open annually to help high-achieving, underfunded students.

Yih Chien also talks about the school’s facilities, including a 9-storey library, a China Media Museum, an Outside Broadcasting (OB) van, high-end recording studios, and its own in-school television network, all of which are perfect for hands-on professional practice for students.

Next, Yih Chien talks about the specifics of her course. Her specialisation of sound production teaches many aspects of music and audio production, as well as some math. Musically oriented students (with a solid base in mathematics) would prosper in this course. After graduation, one could work in various areas of production for music, film and television.

Most online classes at this university are live, with teachers preparing materials like movies and videos to be shared. Yih Chien stresses the importance of maintaining a good relationship with classmates and the class monitor for ready assistance during any emergency situations.

Yih Chien chose this school for a few main reasons: affordability, high quality resources, and celebrity influence. The current trend favouring sound production attracted her to choose her current course specialisation, perfect for a music lover like her. Although she dislikes music composition, her interest in audio editing implored her to come to this school.

Yih Chien then talked about applying to this university. One should ideally be creative to study there. Applications require your academic results, portfolio, and letter of recommendation, and they open around July till August. If one needs more information, they can look up the university’s alumni page on Facebook or contact them on WeChat at ayimalaysia for more information.

A big thanks to Yih Chien and Yvonne for sharing their experiences in this session, which has undoubtedly benefited students’ knowledge of higher education options immensely.
