After a tedious exam week, Kuen Cheng High School organised a talk on May 18th of 2024 for the students of Junior Middle Two and Senior Middle One. The school welcomed the famous writer of Malaysia Biodiversity, Goh Yong Jun to speak about the wonders of nature in Taiping.

Mr Goh was a guest speaker in MyFM in his previous years, and he published a few books named “The Ecology World of Malaysia”, “Taiping Lake Garden” etc. He expressed his enthusiastic passion for ecology when he was little and went further in to learn more about it.

He started off the talk by introducing animals, specifically bird species, which live in Taiping Park’s rain trees. He put an emphasis on the pied hornbills, which are critically endangered yet chose to live close to humanity in Taiping Park.

Mr Goh also introduced the animal species that appeared within his residential area in Taiping, for instance fireflies, frogs, toads and barn owls. He proceeded to elaborate on his experiences with them. He described the animals’ lifestyles with vivid detail.

Then came a sharing session where students eagerly volunteered to share their experiences with flora and fauna around them. One had a mulberry tree in their garden, one with a relative that owned a private island and so on.

He then proceeded to talk about the other bird species and insects of their daily lifestyle, shelters and so on in places like Sekinchan where they would reduce the pest population and help out with the farming.

Lastly, the talk ended with a message to notice the small things happening around you, and the photography group taking a group photo of Mr Goh himself with all the students behind.
