The start of something great facilitates new opportunities and a better tomorrow for all. On the 8th of May, Kuen Cheng High School’s Newsletter Club held its annual Welcoming Party to celebrate the arrival of the club’s new members. The club received approximately 80 new members this year which has broken the record of the previous years.

The event started off at 5:00 p.m. with a quick greeting by the hosts and a warm welcome by the organising committee. Both the President and Vice President, Foo Zhing Yee and Khoo Xin Yi hoped that the newcomers would be able to unleash their full potential with passion in article writing, wishing them a great year ahead.

Moving on, the club’s official committee members were introduced, starting with the Club President, Soo Zi Ming, Vice Presidents, Fong Chloe and Lee Zi Lin. On behalf of the Committee, Zi Ming gave a short welcoming speech directed toward the new members. He mentioned the Club’s history and spoke about how, unlike previous years when the club only had around 100 members, it now grew to a size of more than 180. It was clear that the President and the Committee were grateful to the community of the Newsletter Club that has blossomed throughout the years.

The rest of the committee members gave brief introductions too, eager to work and offer the utmost support to the Club. Then came a short speech by two Student Advisors, Khoo Qi and Chang Qian Hung. They were both the club presidents of the previous year and thus, they both know the club like the back of their hands. Khoo Qi hoped that the newcomers could step out of their comfort zone and explore new hobbies, even sharing her own experiences on how she learned typesetting skills from the Club. On the other hand, Qian Hung assured the new members that they were welcomed in the Club, hoping they won’t miss out on any of the club’s activities or on any chances to report articles. Lastly, the two also agreed that everyone in the club should have fun in the Club and relax a little.

After the introductions, the game session started off. All the club members were divided into 10 breakout rooms according to their groups, each group having their group leaders as the game hosts. There were 5 different games, “Fortunately/Unfortunately”, “Two Truths & A Lie”, “All The Reasons I Entered KCNC”, “Guess The Acronyms” and “Draw & Guess”, in which the members were allowed to choose which game they wish to play. The aim of these games was to strengthen the relationship between the members and welcome them to the Club. Most of the games were well-received, ensuring that everyone had fun while bonding with their group members.

As the game session ended, members filed back into the main meeting room and watched a video of senior members sharing their memories and experiences regarding the Club, which was prepared by the organising committee. Most of them joined the Newsletter Club through their friend’s invitation. They stated that joining the Club gave them the opportunity to interview people and improve their writing skills. They also encouraged the new members to be more active in club activities and cherish their time in the club as it would be a precious memory for all of them.

Senior Members’ Sharing Session

Besides that, both Teacher-advisors, Madam Foo Mun Yee and Ms Song Yin Ying gave some advice to the new members too. Madam Foo advised the members to join more activities in the Club while also doing their best in writing articles and learning new skills through it as it would become “nutrients” in their future. Following, Ms Song hoped that all members would be courageous in writing articles, interviewing people and also photo shooting. She also mentioned that teamwork is the most important thing that members should learn through their work. Both teachers hoped the members could shine brightly in the Club and wished them a memorable year.

Before the welcoming party came to an end, the committee snapped a group photo of all the members. The event was certainly an amazing, cherished and entertaining one. A nice memory for all the members. Wishing all members a fun year ahead!
