Monday, 2 March 2020. This week’s assembly was attended by Junior 1, Junior Three, and Senior Three students. The assembly began in the usual way — the students greeted the teachers; sang Negaraku, Malaysian National Anthem and the school anthem, and then followed by the recitation of the school pledge. A steady flow of information and a reading session is presented accordingly.
1. AWARDS CEREMONY
The awards presented this week comprised victories of varying magnitude in various sports competitions. Hopefully, Kuen Cheng’s students will continue to bring her glory by doing well in competitions out of school in addition to their usual accomplishments in school.
2. RAISING AWARENESS FOR A DONATION DRIVE BY DONG ZONG
OurVice Principal, Ms. Koo Lai Ping took to the stage to raise awareness for a donation drive by The United Chinese School Committees’ Association of Malaysia (Dong Zong), one of the primary caretakers for the establishment of Chinese Education and the Independent Chinese High Schools in Malaysia. Ms. Koo played a video regarding the history of Dong Zong and gave a PowerPoint presentation detailing the donation campaign. The funds raised would be used to build a multipurpose hall annexed to the current Dong Zong complex which would house facilities conducive to the continued development of the Chinese education system. Ms. Koo ended the segment by encouraging students to support this drive to the best of their ability.
3. LAUNCHING OF THE “LOVE MY KUEN CHENG” CAMPAIGN
Three representatives from the Class Monitor Club introduced “Love My Kuen Cheng” — a continuous campaign with the aim of creating a better environment for all in Kuen Cheng. This campaign would allow students to submit proposals to the School Monitor Club to expound their ideas on ways to improve the school. One suggestion from the presenters was the decoration of the blank walls around the school. The students were encouraged to submit proposals to make a difference with their ideas.
4. THIS WEEK’S READER
Sr3A’s Ng Wan Cheen was this week’s reader. He read, alongside piano accompaniment by Sr3ComA’s Justine Lu, a speech (given in 1956) by Lim Lian Geok on Hari Raya Aidilfitri titled “Manifesting a Malayan Mindset”.The speech called to importance the strengthening of the psyche in maintaining the strength of a nation. Another prominent message conveyed in the speech was the need for pride and love for one’s country — “Any person who has become a citizen of Malaya, yet refuses to recognize Malaya as his fatherland, is also a criminal in the eyes of Malaya.” The messages conveyed in this speech should be kept in mind lest we forget our true identity as our country confronts the numerous challenges head-on.
