We had Monday, 24 February 2020 weekly assembly, this time, for students of Junior 2, Senior 1 and Senior 2. As per standard procedure, the assembly began by the Head Prefects leading the students to greet the teachers, the students singing the national and school anthem, and then reading the school motto aloud.
After everyone was seated, a video explaining the history of the Malaysian Chinese education and The United Chinese School Committees’ Association of Malaysia (Dong Zong) was played. The school Vice Principal, Ms Koo Lai Ping explained how without DongZong, there would not have been Independent Chinese Secondary School Unified Examination (UEC). This morning the topic has been brought up to the assembly because DongZong will be organising fundraising for the purpose of constructing a Multipurpose Hall. She hoped everyone could help spread the word.
Next, the Class Monitors Team had an announcement to make about the ‘Love Our Kuen Cheng’ campaign. Students, groups or even entire classes would be able to make proposals to take initiatives to make the school a better place. The proposal would go through the Class Monitors first, then to the Disciplinary Department, and lastly any other Department teachers involved. If the proposal was approved, the individual/group/class would be able to take action. At the end of the year, they would have to write their reflection on the event and what benefits it has brought them and the school.
The third segment was about Crisis Prevention and Management procedures. The emergency rendezvous locations were the open-air parking lot in front of Block A and the red brick area at the side of the school hall. Besides that, students can find the class escape route at the back of their classrooms. In an escape, students are to abandon their belongings, line up orderly and act without panic, and are to cut off all power connections before leaving, if possible. Class monitors should also carry the class sign with them if the situation allows for it. Anyone left behind should not bother trying to find their class’s line, and instead should head straight to the front of the area where they can report to the temporary disciplinary aid station. After reaching the designated point, class monitors must do a roll call and report missing persons and numbers to the station assigned.
Lastly, Carmen Ngo from Jr3A presented a lovely reading for the assembly. It was a short but great tale of the values and background of the renowned Abraham Lincoln. Although there was no music to accompany the reading as per planned, her reading was still crystal clear and easily understood. And of course, the audience applauded her well.
Before the assembly ended, the Disciplinary Department also announced that they would take measures against girls who left their bangs unclipped, effective immediately. True to their word, as students filed out of the school hall, those who did not meet the school’s dress code were handed over and lectured accordingly. Before the weekly assembly ended, all students bowed and thanked the teachers, and then classes began to file out one by one.
