A welcoming party for any club is extremely important. Why? This is because it symbolizes the official beginning of a new year for existing club members and welcomes newbies into their new family. When a club puts in effort to organize and plan a warm welcome to ensure all members feel included, you can feel it. I can definitely say Yoga Club did an amazing job at that!

Kuen Cheng High School Yoga Club held its welcoming party on Friday, 21 February 2020 at the 9th floor of Block C, new members were hard to differentiate from the existing ones as all of them had put on the same Club T-shirt and everyone was excited to see what the committee had planned for them. The committee started by introducing the first game to everyone, called ‘Getting to know everyone!’ Everyone is handed out a piece of paper filled with boxes of characteristics or categories and they have to look and ask around for people to fill that box. New members looked visibly nervous but everyone got up on their feet anyway to finish their mission. Not to mention there would be a mystery punishment for those who failed to fill in at least 7 boxes so that got people going as well!

Members were actively walking around and talking to each other which fulfilled half of the game’s aim. In order to fulfill its aim completely, the committee members randomly selected pieces of paper to question members on their memory of the person who held the pen to their paper at the end of the game. Everyone had a great laugh at the two people who couldn’t remember who wrote on their paper and they had to hold a yoga pose chosen by the other members for 30 seconds and last but not least have their picture posted on the official Facebook Page of Kuen Cheng’s Yoga Club. That marked the end of the first game and very soon, members were introduced to the second game!

Second game was a more interesting one because it involved no speaking and words at all; the only forms of communication allowed were hand signs and body movements. The idea was to ‘find your partner’, every member is given a tiny piece of paper with a random word on it but the catch is that each word has their own combination and they will have to find the other person holding the word in the same category. This game served wonders as it drew many out of their shells as everyone started to warm up to one another, after all the pairs were found we were brought into a circle and that was the introduction to the third game and let me tell you, intense concentration required…

Personally, this one was my favourite as it kept everyone on their toes. Two people would hold an item and place it behind a random person, patting their back and the chase starts to fight for the empty seat. The number of people with an item would keep increasing and the circle would get smaller after each round. I absolutely love the energy of this game, the anticipation and excitement of whether you will be the next ‘victim’. That feeling of relief when you thought it was going to be you but it turned out to be the person next to you. Whew, last thing on the list was pizza! After games, members moved to the canteen to enjoy boxes of pizza and that ended the day perfectly. I am sure this welcoming party made the members looks forward to future activities with their new friends and that, is how you could tell that a welcoming party was spot on. Just like this one!
