On Saturday, 15 February 2020, the school Music Production Club had joined force with the Chinese Orchestra to organise a brand new activity called “Rhythmic Cups”, which Junior Two students participated in during the second session of our Learning Activity Day. Students from Jr2A to Jr2G were led by the members of the Music Production Club, while the remaining classes were taken over by the Chinese Orchestra.
The students stayed put in their respective classes during the activity and had their desks moved into different arrangements to the club members’ convenience. Each class used Jay Chow’s “Dao Xiang/ Fragrant Rice” as the melody as they learned the basic steps of knocking, clapping and hitting the cups or tables to create a beat. Each class, by the end of the session, had produced their own unique rhythm, different from all other classes.
This activity was carried out smoothly as the students had given out their full attention to the seniors teaching in front, carefully examining the notes and beats written across the white board. After nearly two hours of practicing, the Photography Club showed up to record a video of the whole song as a submission for the friendly competition between each class. The students found the event interesting and up-to-date, though other students saw a good opportunity to build stronger, steadier relationships among friends.
The Music Production Club that has previously shown a similar performance last year hopes that Junior 2 students enjoy this original style of making music through one’s creativity and pleasure, and to discover the beauty of music in our everyday lives.
