To strengthen the bond between students of Kuen Cheng High School and Tokyo Jogakkan Middle School & High School, all the way from Japan for the exchange program, our Japanese Language Society organized an International Friendship Week from the 22nd to the 26th of July, 2024. The event aimed to help students foster cross-cultural harmony and unity, and appreciate Japanese culture.

During the event, students from Tokyo Jogakkan were divided into five groups, each presenting a different aspect of Japanese culture. The first group introduced Japanese school life, highlighting the unique start of the school year in April, which coincides with the cherry blossom season—an experience quite different from Malaysia.

The second group took everyone on a virtual tour of iconic Japanese locations such as Tokyo, Kyoto, and Shibuya, sharing the distinct charm of each city. Next, the third group showcased traditional Japanese cuisine, featuring well-known dishes like sushi and ramen, and explained how these foods represent their cultural heritage.

In the fourth presentation, the students introduced popular anime series such as Oshi no Ko, Demon Slayer, and Haikyuu!!, demonstrating Japan’s global influence in the anime industry. Last but not least, the fifth and final group discussed Japanese festivals and traditions, engaging the audience by inviting everyone to stand and bow three times, simulating the traditional way of praying at a shrine.

Later in the event, Tokyo Jogakkan’s Principal delivered a captivating performance, playing the beautiful piece Haru no Umi on the shakuhachi flute, dressed in traditional haori and hakama. He not only shared the history of his attire but also explained in detail how the shakuhachi flute works, captivating the audience with his knowledge and skill.

The day concluded with an energetic dance performance by the Japanese students, filling the atmosphere with joy and excitement. This celebration of Japan’s rich cultural heritage served as a reaffirmation of the values of friendship and unity, leaving everyone with lasting memories of this special occasion.
