The Xiao Sheng Chinese Literature Contest is known to be an esteemed event that allows students to express their skills in writing Chinese literature. To prepare students for said competition, on the 18th of May 2024, the Academic Department held a short seminar to increase the students’ knowledge of writing Chinese literature. The department was lucky enough to be able to invite Mr. Ian Lew Yu Long, an experienced writer who has won several awards in writing competitions, to hold a seminar regarding the principles of writing a good prose.

Mr. Lew explains that, at its core, prose is the basic structure of all bodies of writing. Compared to other formatted bodies of writing like novels, plays, and poems, which are basically prose developed over time, writers have more freedom over the format and content when writing prose. Therefore, prose acts as a platform for writers to unleash their creativity and pour their emotions, thoughts and ideas onto a piece of writing. Even though writers have an extreme amount of freedom when writing prose, it is important for writers to note that the theme of the prose should be prominent and constant throughout the piece.

A well-written piece of prose consists of a prominent theme, mature writing skills, detailed descriptions and a good structure. Writers are encouraged to use different writing techniques, such as similes and metaphors, so that their writing does not seem flat. Concise vocabulary and detailed descriptions help bring the story to life. An interesting introduction acts as a hook to lure the readers in while an impactful ending leaves a strong impression on them. Effective clues should be placed strategically throughout the piece to connect the main ideas together, forming a cohesive piece of prose that reads smoothly. “To sum it up,” said Mr. Lew, “I believe a well-written piece of prose is a piece that can move me and make me relate to the writer through their powerful words.”

Mr. Lew stressed on the importance of writing prose based on real-life experiences. This way, writers can channel real emotions and make their prose more impactful. Other than that, he also emphasised the importance of setting a good title for a piece of prose. A good title is subtle, creative and linked tightly to the theme of the piece. It catches the attention of readers and makes an already well-written piece of prose even better. While explaining, he referred to multiple examples from other works of prose to illustrate his point. He also advised us to carry pen and paper with us at all times to jot down any ideas we may have whenever and wherever.

The seminar came to a close after a brief Q&A session. Members of the Photography Club took a group photo of all the participants in the seminar to record this memorable experience. At the instruction of the prefects, the students left the auditorium in an orderly manner.
