To provide guidance to our SPM (Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia) candidates in preparing for their upcoming exams, the Academic Department organised a talk on effective answering techniques for the Malay Language subject. This helpful session took place on September 29th, 2023 during the 7th to 10th periods, and it was led by Cikgu Tan CL, a skilled BM teacher who has authored over 400 reference books for SPM candidates.
Mr Tan started the talk with an overview of the Malay Language examination papers. He then delved into more detailed discussions to provide students with valuable insights and strategies for their exams. One of Mr. Tan’s useful techniques he presented is the “KISS ME” formula for essay writing:
-
“K” for “Kerajaan” (government).
-
“I” for “ibu bapa” (parents).
-
“S” for “sekolah” (school).
-
Another “S” for “sahabat” (friends).
-
“M” for “media.”
-
This approach was meant to help the students to use simple language while addressing these key elements in their essays.

Besides that, Mr. Tan’s presentation on the Bahasa Melayu Standard in Paper 2 might seem challenging, but he made it easier to understand. It involves translating a classic BM passage with incorrect grammar into modern BM without changing its content. This part tests language proficiency and understanding of the language’s history. Lastly, he shared insights into possible essay formats that may appear in this year’s exam, such as resumes, emails, and blogs, along with their structures. This information is beneficial for the students to focus their preparation.
During the whole talk, all the students were paying full attention, attentive to raising their hands for questions, and taking down personal notes all the time. This talk undoubtedly provided them with valuable tips, and by the end, there was a sense of satisfaction and readiness for the exam.
