On the 24th of June 2023, Kuen Cheng High School organised a talk regarding literature in the school hall. Junior Middle Three, Senior Middle One and Two students participated in the talk. The speaker of this event was Mr. Fang Lu, a well-known author who is noted for writing prose and novels. He has a long list of achievements including the Malaysian outstanding young author award and the outstanding trendy literary award for his unique art of writing.
The talk started with an opening speech by our speaker at 8.10 a.m. He gave us a brief introduction on the course of the talk and then proceeded to talk about his view on novels. Mr. Fang Lu elaborated that novels are the most exciting literary genre to most high school students.
During the first session, Mr Fang introduced flash fiction novels, also known as “palm-of-the-hand stories” in Japan and “minute fiction” in China. Mr Fang stated that flash fiction stories are related to the lives of modern society and expressed as a novel. Scenery, plot, atmosphere, conversations and imagination are the key elements of such a novel. He then proceeded to talk about the works of Indian novelist Ruskin Bond and Japanese Novelist Yasunori Kawabata.
At the following session, Mr Fang introduced another novel type named microfiction. The main elements of making a microfiction good is its unexpected plot twists and the level of engagement. He then presented Argentinian Novelist Enrique Anderson-Imbert and his work “Dream”.
During the third session, Mr Fang Lu arranged time for students to use their newly acquired skills in novels to write a novel from 1 out of 2 topics prepared. After 15 minutes, he picked out some of the creations and reviewed them personally and gave them feedback about what could be improved upon.
The talk then ended at 9.50 a.m. along with a group photo to capture this wonderful day spent together with Mr Fang Lu. We are so grateful for his presence.
