In order to provide a deeper understanding of Malay traditional culture to the students, Kuen Cheng High School organised Wau (traditional Malay kite) Making competitions for both students of the junior and senior levels on 20th May 2023. The competition took place in the C1 Chemistry Lab and C2 Biology Lab. Junior category started from 8 am to 10 am, seniors from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm. Respectively, there were a total of 18 teams and 17 teams. This competition has successfully enhanced our students’ painting skills and the colour coordination techniques.

Due to time constraints, participants were allowed to draw the design of their Wau patterns in advance. The requirements for the art techniques encompassed traditional and creative elements, giving the Wau a unique charm. The competition started soon after materials were distributed with competition rules briefly explained.

The competition lasted 2 hours, during which each participating group had to paint their pre-designed Wau and give embellishments within this timeframe.

Members from each group work hand in hand to colour the Wau.

Undoubtedly, the most exciting part of the competition would be the last ten minutes till it drew to a close. Some participants could be spotted adding the final strokes to their team’s artwork, while others hurriedly attached decorations onto the wau as the final touch up. It was such a relief when the competition ended. Every participant felt immensely proud of their own creations.

At the end of the competition, the teachers took photos of the completed Wau artwork with their group members. We are so grateful to the Organising Committee for making this event possible. Our students were able to experience the unique, artistic charm of Malay kites with the meticulous planning provided.
