To mark the Kuen Cheng 115th Anniversary, Kuen Cheng High School is in a celebratory mood. A series of events will be taking place this year. The Art Exhibition was just one of the highlights. An opening ceremony of the art exhibition that showcases art through different generations was held on the 25th of March 2023. Famous artists, alumni, teachers and students were among the art exhibitors. Our Chairman, Members of the School Board, guests from Kuen Cheng Primary Schools, donors and the Principal were invited to witness this memorable moment.

The booming drums sound of 24-Festive Season Drum marked the start of the ceremony, instantly warming up the crowd. After the drum performance, the honorable guests were invited to come forward for the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Positioning themselves behind the ribbon with a pair of scissors, the ribbon was finally cut on the count of three, earning a round of applause from the audience.

Everyone then proceeded to head into the art exhibition. All of our guests paused to take a group photo at the entrance. The artwork exhibited ranged from digital art, pop art, clay, calligraphy, interior design, and acrylic on canvas to traditional oil paintings, ink paintings, etc. These arts are not only drawn by professionals, alumni, and teachers from the 1960s to 1990s but also by our students, and even the Kuen Cheng Kindergarten kids.

With a hall filled with mesmerizing artwork, one would start to wonder about the talented artists. We got a few comments from some respectable artists present on Saturday. We met with Mr. Keith Chong Kah Hwee, a well-known comic artist. He was very impressed with the exhibition. He stated that it was well-rounded and inclusive of different art forms. Mr. Chong expressed his thoughts on the importance of incorporating art into our lives starting from a young age.

Furthermore, we were lucky to share a few moments with a highly talented Kuen Cheng High School alumni, Mr. Faith Foo. He is a 2019 graduate and had his masterpiece displayed in the exhibition. Mr. Foo raved about the artwork displayed. “Although some pieces may not be considered conventionally beautiful, the raw emotion poured into the artwork is remarkable.” “There is a high sense of intimacy in the artworks.” Mr. Foo was touched by the intense emotion displayed in the artwork by artists and held high respect for their courage to express themselves.

After admiring the artwork, students slowly filed out of the hall, heading back to their classes to continue the day’s activities. Our heartfelt gratitude to all who have come to support this event, and everyone working behind the scenes for making this event happen.

Art Exhibition preparations have been made since the start of the year. To celebrate the 115th Anniversary of Kuen Cheng High School, a series of events will be held throughout the year. One of the highlights being the art exhibition.
Teachers from the Art Department curated the exhibition, selecting the best artworks out of the many students of all age groups. The showcased artworks were created by kindergarteners, primary and high school students, and even our alumni from different batches.
Visitors can tell the distinctive features of artists and the difference in art styles across ages as soon as one steps into the exhibition hall. The art exhibition was opened with a grand ceremony attended by Junior Middle 3 students on Saturday, 25th March 2023. For the first two days, the exhibition was open to the public. It still was open the following week, but exclusively for Kuen Cheng students.
Volunteers from several clubs stationed at the exhibition hall to ensure the safety of the numerous artworks and maintain order in the exhibition hall as there was a huge influx of enthusiastic visitors.
For the safety of the artworks, edible or consumable items were not allowed to be brought into the exhibition hall. The volunteers did an excellent job maintaining order even with crowds of young visitors such as the primary school students and kindergarteners. Guiding teachers visiting with the groups also took pictures of their students who were in appreciation of the artworks.
Overall, it was an enriching experience. Not only it showcased the finest art created by our schools, but it also taught us to appreciate all types of art, not just the classical paintings but photos and calligraphy as well are both forms of art.
