Just before the long-awaited year-end holiday, Sr1ScD caught a chance to have a class trip to the University of Malaya on 2 December 2022. The whole trip is organised by our Form Teacher, Mr Ooi Hun Huang, who is also the Assistant Admin Head of the Academic Department, collaborating with the University of Malaya. Besides having fun, this journey aims to broaden students’ minds and provide the opportunity to have a better understanding of Malaysia’s top-ranked university.

At 8:10 in the morning, the students arrived at the University of Malaya by bus. After entering the building, students were led to a conference room where several seniors introduced us to the Faculty of Medicine. We were given a tour around the faculty and were shown various specimens of human organs. Moreover, we entered a room displaying specimens of preserved organs or tissues infected by diseases, including the heart, lungs and even fetuses. Roughly around 9.40 am, we moved on to the next destination, the Museum of Asian Arts.

When we entered, the museum was still in the process of painting and was yet to receive visitors completely. Having a deep insight into the building, it was easy to realise that the interior exhibit was designed with a vintage Malay style. Furthermore, the displayed art crafts were beyond our expectations. Numerous historical sculptures and ancient utensils were well-preserved and placed behind glasses. On top of that, the administrator of the museum presented the objects while adding detailed explanations to the students.

For the final exhibition, we went to UM’s botanical garden, Taman Botani Rimba Ilmu. The garden caretaker gave us a tour around the greenhouse and proceeded to lead us to the botanical garden. He introduced us to various types of unique plants that face extinction, and some plants that grow exclusively in Malaysia. We also had the pleasure of trying the scent of multiple plants.

The trip drew to an end later than expected at half past noon. After having a group photo, the students alongside the teacher got onto the bus and set off back to school. Despite being exhausted due to the hot weather, all the students indulged during the trip and looked forward to any future outreaching trips. Lastly, this trip to the University of Malaya was quite fruitful as the objectives were met. Hopefully, the School will continue to organise more similar activities in the upcoming future.
