Starting from a simple online workshop, to the submissions for the preliminary round, to the grand finals, we are proud to present 5 of the Sunway Diploma Studies Competition (SDSC) winning teams from Kuen Cheng High School.

The competition was split into 4 categories, namely the Web Designer Competition, Investment Portfolio Management Competition, Business Challenge and “Study on Reels for Reals!” Competition. The members of the winning teams each received bursaries (for the programs in Sunway Diploma Studies) and certificates of commendation.

To further understand the competitions from the insider perspective of the participants, we’ve invited the winning teams for an exclusive interview.

Although the members faced some unavoidable communication issues throughout the competition, the “Defined” team felt fulfilled after finishing in second place. Furthermore, the team initially knew that Sunway College has a lot of interesting competitions and they chose to participate in the Web Designer Competition because they like to challenge something different than usual.

“Defined” enjoyed the competition because programming was something they never learned and now they were able to present their work easily. To quote: “If we have the opportunity, we may choose to participate in other types of competitions, in order to explore our other inner potential, but also to cultivate our interests.“

As a group of commerce stream students, “Future Presidents” wanted to enhance and strengthen their relevant knowledge in business, which was the main factor which inspired them to participate in the Investment Portfolio Competition. Moreover, talking about their preference of the online settings of the competition, “Future Presidents” think both of the settings consist of their own pros and cons so there is no difference for them.

“Everything was new to us, so we started from zero and learnt everything about investment by doing research on the Internet.” Despite the team having basically zero idea where to start from, they still managed to succeed in the competition and they enjoyed it a lot. “If we had a chance, we would totally join the competition again in the future”, said “Future Presidents”.

When the ”TiTAN” group found out that they won the award in the Investment Portfolio Competition, they were surprised and relieved. Talking about their “preference of this competition to be held online or physical”, they mentioned that they prefer the competition to be held online because online presentations do not require face-to-face and review exchanges, which can effectively reduce nervousness and stage fright.

The members of “TiTAN” did not know where to start, and it was difficult for them to understand all aspects of the stock at the beginning. To solve this tough problem, the team asked someone who has experience in stock investment for further assistance. “Any investment has risks, everyone should be cautious.”

After hearing about the competition from their bookkeeping teacher, KC Elites decided to join in on the Business Challenge for the experience. Though the competition was held online, they preferred it that way as they were able to present their final product without much pressure. However, it was more of a problem for them when taking current market demands into account as they usually aren’t required to look into such economic problems.

“We recommend joining this competition. If it’s held physically next year, we think it would be a great way to show your potential and learn from your opponents. Most importantly, you can accumulate experience and courage.” Following their success, the team was quite proud after seeing so many other opponents enter the finals. Although it is unlikely for them to use the winners’ bursaries, the team enjoyed the competition as it didn’t take up too much time, and managed to hone their thoughts and creativity.

Through the hardships faced by language barriers and learning from new experiences, Mouche thoroughly enjoyed the competition, especially when having fun recording their video for the reel. As the winners were announced, the team was both surprised and thrilled to find out that their hard work had not gone to waste.

The team’s original goal was just to gain some experience after their teacher encouraged them to join the competition, but they also managed to improve themselves throughout the process. Thus, they’ll probably join the competition again next year.

“Actually, it’s our first time entering this type of competition. We’re not experienced professionals, so we can’t give any solid advice but… We hope you won’t be afraid of any obstacles or challenges you face along the way, since the cost of failure you’ll receive as a student is minimal, so be brave! We also hope that those who end up working in such industries will be passionate in what they do.”
