On the 28th of August, Kuen Cheng High School organized an online talk for parents of Junior Middle One students on fostering culture and positive family relationships. The Talk started from 10.30 a.m. till 12.00 p.m. We were honoured to have Mr Tan Yong Chin, our School Admin Head of the Counseling Department as the speaker for the day.

After a brief self-introduction, Mr Tan introduced the topics covered in the Talk such as family culture concept, and bringing parent and child relationships together through the five languages of love. Before the Talk started, Mr Tan shared a video about an interview with ten years old children on what they want the most when they grow up?

Moving on, Mr Tan proceeded to share how parents can become a ‘Life-leveled parent’, and the basics is to build family culture in life. He mentioned that a good parent-child relationship plays a big part in mending family issues. He asked the parents to ponder upon two very noteworthy questions: ‘Today, can I be loved and accepted by you?’ ’Am I valuable in your eyes?’

Basics of becoming a ‘Life-leveled parent’

Mr Tan then introduced a concept called “Love Bank”. He added that this concept not only can be used in a parent-child relationship, as well between them and their spouse. He went on with his words by explaining, cheering up and bringing the other joy is an indication of depositing. If we disappoint or make the other one sad, it indicates a withdrawal.

Mr Tan went on to talk about ways to deposit into the love bank, which is the five love languages, and gave examples of how they could be applied to real-life to foster a positive family culture. Firstly, Mr Tan heavily emphasized on Words of Affirmation, as he advised parents to communicate and express their thoughts to their children effectively.

Quality Time

The second love language was Quality Time. Mr Tan advised parents to spend time with their children on weekends, listen to their problems and allow them to make mistakes. The third love language was Gift Giving, the fourth was Acts of Service, and last but not least, Physical Touch.

Mr Tan wrapped up the talk by sharing about his personal experience, as his firstborn had to be incubated after an early birth of 24 weeks. He used this story to emphasize the importance of appreciating time spent with family. He encouraged parents to observe their children’s love language, and use it as a stepping stone to fostering a positive family culture.

With that, the Jr1 Parents’ Talk on building positive relationships with family came to an end. We hope to have even more educational talks from the Counseling Department in the near future!
